Try to keep things in perspective. World homicide rates remain steady at around 7 per 100,000 per year. In the UK it's around 500-600 per year. So the 'success rate' for terrorists and assorted mass murderers is actually very small, when you think about it. You can't stop people from murdering people, but you can certainly laugh in the face of 'terrorism'. In fact I highly recommend it. Most murderers who think they're fulfilling some sort of noble objective really are a joke, in my opinion.
But they don't think they are a joke. They die and become martyrs to the next generation.

It's probably for the best that such people end their own existence. What they think is irrelevant to me.

It's their taking innocents with them that's the problem.

I'm sure that will be of great comfort to the families of those that were killed by a terrorist dressed as Santa while out celebrating the new year.

Can't believe your post! Keep it in perspective? Really?

Those are the police you see and are visible to reassure the public of their presence; there will be just as many plain clothes officers on duty. And there are simply too many potential targets to even possibly consider protecting: not just 'famous' places, but every hotel, hospital, department store, market, school, bus and train station, airport, etc., etc., etc. The list is endless. The key to stopping most major attacks is intelligence; lone attackers, especially those with no 'history' are almost impossible to stop
Unfortunately, I have three family members working for the police and this is not true at all at least in our county where we live (West Yorkshire Police). They do not have the money or the actual number of physical police officers for it to ever equal out.

Evil murdering lowlife scumbags. It could happen anywhere and like people say it's impossible to police every venue or put armed police on every street. Good undercover policing and intelligence from the security services is our best defence. No more pussy-footing around we need tougher laws regarding islamic hate preachers who influence men and women and encourage them to commit atrocities. Their social media should be closed and homes searched if they're suspected BEFORE they do something. We're at war and these are dangerous times with terrorists among us.

What's wrong with showing some perspective? More than 20,000 people are murdered across Europe, on average, each year. While these attacks may induce terror in some it should be comforting to know that they are a drop in the ocean.

And before anyone implies that I'm not showing respect/compassion/whatever it ought to go without saying that the lives taken by murderers are a tragic loss and I feel for the families of those affected by tragedy.

I agree with WhatJoeThinks re the perspective thing based on the likelihood of a terrorist attack still being small. The terrorists want us to stop going to places and living life to the full and instead cower in fear. Whilst these attacks remain relatively rare it's important not to give them what they want.

Of course it goes without saying it's tragic for the people involved.

Saudi Arabia is the problem, it is where the funding and the ideology of these evil scumbags come from. We need to shut them down, stop buying their oil, stop selling them weapons, stop other countries selling them food and water and medicine.

Why call it Saudi Arabia?

The correct term should be ISIS Arabia - they are the filth of the earth and every time that a Western democratic leader does abase themselves before the Dark age, misogynistic, homophobic scum it proves our leaders have no moral compass.

At all.

I don't think there would have been many there laughing whilst being terrorised!

How awful for all caught up in yet another atrocity by brainwashed neanderthals.

Cheers. I'm not sure what I've ever typed that has led you to suppose that it genuinely hadn't occurred to me that the problem with acts of terrorism is the innocent lives that are taken.

I hesitate to add, for the benefit of all the lurkers, that although I appended the above post with a "" I do not find the loss of innocent lives amusing.

Please, don't insult my neandertalians ancestors (europeans have between 2 and 4, maybe 6% neandertalian DNA, we'll discover in the next years that we probably have more). There's no proof at all that the original europeans were braindead bloody monsters!

Was thinking that though this is a horrible thing, so glad the Internet did not exist 75 years ago.
How many people died in a Allied or German bombing mission?

Or 40 years ago when IRA and assorted groups in Europe (Germany and Spain) were killing people.

Yes those generations were outraged as are people today. But, in reality will it ever change?

very good point.
......would the ease of expressing instant outrage prevent new wars though?

I keep hearing about how miniscule the odds are in dying in a terrorist incident, yet it's the 1st January and already 39 people are lying dead.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-38481521

Do any of the forum terror statisticians want to make a prediction . Here and now on New Year's Day. As to how many people will lose their lives to terrorism this year?

F**k "perspective".

I've got more chance of winning the lottery - and I've probably only bought a ticket every 5 years.
For those directly affected, it's very real of course.
I'm not trying to minimise this dreadful attack in Turkey.

Turkey had tens of thousands of of armed police out for NYear and this wasn't/couldn't be prevented.
It's also easy to be wise after the event and say that clubs should not have admitted anyone in fancy dress etc but equally I don't know the door security measures at this night club.

Terrorist murders are different from other murders beause they attack a way of life, not an individual as such.Whole societies are threatened. Europe is becoming an armed camp. And due to the arrival of all those migrants, amongst whom are concealed terrorists, we are goint to be stuck with a deterioration of our quality of life which will be permanent.
