The fact is, no matter what they did, some people wouldn't like it.

Because there is nothing that everyone likes. Not even the idea of an updated globe created by silhouetted things coming together.

If they had done that, then there would be a thread complaining about that too.
It's unique to come up with something that has been received this badly though.

Granted there will always be someone who doesn't like something new. I'm sure there would have been a bad reaction to losing in vision announcers in favour of the first globe in 1963, but to have 100% condemnation is quite an achievement.

99.9999%! I think it's novel and rather brave, and somewhat inappropriate and unorthodox at the same time.

So if it wasn't bad enough, the BBC are now promoting the rebrand through their news service! I'd be trying to hide these, not publicise them.

The only saving grace is that just two have been filmed. I hope to god the idea gets dropped before any more are filmed.

Just seen the new idents for the first time and do you know what they remind me of?

The original Carlton - Television For London idents.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL71pT10nUM

Why do they think freezing cold swimmers mean BBC or ITV ?

To be fair, ITV's swimmers ident was launched nearly four years ago and is one of hundreds. So it means absolutely nothing, but you'll rarely actually see it because there are so many.

If the BBC did a similar thing and had say 60 or so simple idents, it wouldn't be so bad.

Apparently it's "to reflect the diversity of modern Britain and the changing mood of the nation through significant moments in the calendar year".

I think they're particularly drab. Maybe January is a drab cheerless month?

The worst part of it is the "oneness" tag line. Talk about pretentious. What on earth is it supposed to mean?

So you missed the reports of the BBC having to finance the World Service and BBC Monitoring (previously funded by the Government)? And the BBC having to fund free TV Licences for the over-75's (again, a social decision taken by and funded by the Government)? And the BBC providing funding for S4C and local TV services?
I did find them, but also another report that pegged these as less than 1% of annual budget so hardly significant. I also found reports of a massive pension hole, department overspending and significant mismanagement. It's difficult to find our what's actually going on as the BBC seem remarkably closed for a state-funded institution.

I'm quite pro BBC (and the licence fee) but they really do appear to be their own worst enemy sometimes.

I wonder if the negative reaction will curtail that?

I would hope so.
Negative reactive? A few people on Digital Spy, I bet most people have not noticed any change and most of the others could not care less.

They're like a budget version of ITV's idents, and ITV idents look cheap.

Please, just stop with these live action crap.

This latest embarrassing waste of licence payers money by the BBC has upset many people; http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...led-today.html
It is the Daily Mail?

A handful of people on Twitter moan about the BBC and it is a major issue in the Mail, main more complain on Twitter about the Mail and it is ignored completely by them!

Agree, so predictable that the Daily Fail would write up something on this.

Tbh I didn't know it was an new ident. I sat with the family to watch Sherlock and we all wondering why we were seeing a clip of freezing looking water with wobbly fleshed people standing in it. Now I know it's going to be a regular sight!

Then that report was wrong, and did not consider the effect of the free TV Licences, which on its own has been estimated to cost £650 million**, 20% of the BBC's budget (and a cost which will increase with the ageing population).

The cost of supporting BBC World Service was put at £254 million*** whilst S4C costs were £76 million and local tv was £23 million totalling £607 million (closer to 18% of its income).

Have you a link to that report please?

Most contributors to this thread (numbering significantly more than "a few").

A negative reaction on Twitter, a negative reaction on the TVForum website. And that's just online. wait until the next edition of the Radio Times Letters page, and any upcoming Points of View.

And I fail to see how "most people" would have failed to notice any change.

Yes, that is going to get very irritating if used throughout 2017.

The only thing that's a "fail" is these new idents.

This is probably the only Daily Mail article I'll ever agree with.

I have come around to your way of thinking. I hate the idents. Only airing twoon a relaunch of a channel was pathetic. What were they thinking.

I still think that had they launched with around 8 and had a few well shot ones on launch day, that would have at least created a "Jury's out" viewpoint rather than the universal slagging off. But, I won't be watching BBC1 live until these two idents are dropped or joined by many more so that I don't keep bloody seeing them.

Sorry it took so long to come aroundto your viewpoint, but I'm there now!

I can just record BBC1 and skip through the idents when I WANT to watch. I will just watch the shows I record on ITV and put up with the ads and watch BBC1 on catch up. Do you have a problem with that? A mass boycott of watching BBC1 live would give them a message that their idents are shite.

No point in complaining if you are not going to do anything about it.

All the press releases seem to be falling in line with the notion that this campaign is for 2017- implying 12 months, but no longer (well, 11 months, as the Christmas idents get earlier each year)

So- not designed to last for ever- but a year is still a year too long.
Interesting, perhaps under contract? Reminds me of when they changed the EastEnders theme to that jazzy rendition in 1993. It was hugely unpopular with viewers and eventually changed back 11 months later. Again probably under contract.
