Then that report was wrong, and did not consider the effect of the free TV Licences, which on its own has been estimated to cost £650 million**, 20% of the BBC's budget (and a cost which will increase with the ageing population).
The cost of supporting BBC World Service was put at £254 million*** whilst S4C costs were £76 million and local tv was £23 million totalling £607 million (closer to 18% of its income). Have you a link to that report please? ** http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-33400935 *** http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016...nce-fee-money/ ![]() I'll try to dig up the report I found. Also, not trying to deviate the thread too far, so may start another thread or see if one already exists to discus this. |

I don't see the point in idents these days anyway. They seem outdated. Just play a quick sting before a show starts.

Most contributors to this thread (numbering significantly more than "a few").
A negative reaction on Twitter, a negative reaction on the TVForum website. And that's just online. wait until the next edition of the Radio Times Letters page, and any upcoming Points of View. And I fail to see how "most people" would have failed to notice any change. I had noticed until I saw the image in Mail but did not pause to read. |

[quote=D_Mcd4;85028050]Apparently it's "to reflect the diversity of modern Britain and the changing mood of the nation through significant moments in the calendar year".
Well I heard the announcement and like the idea but have to say that having seen the Zumba Class these new idents really are CRAP, I have read that there is another that the filmed featuring Wheelchair is it Basket Ball or Rugby?. I think to put it in context for all of us what we would like are some idents which give us a warm feeling and look appealing but these just don't and instead make us think what the..., they look just cold. |

I can just record BBC1 and skip through the idents when I WANT to watch. I will just watch the shows I record on ITV and put up with the ads and watch BBC1 on catch up. Do you have a problem with that? A mass boycott of watching BBC1 live would give them a message that their idents are shite.
No point in complaining if you are not going to do anything about it. Out of interest, how will the Beeb detect the mass ignoring of their programme junctions? ![]() Quite honestly from the moment the end credits on a programme roll until the actual start of the next one, is increasing like watching a commercial break. It's gets largely ignored (live) or zapped through (PVR) by me. It's the programmes that are ultimately important, not the packaging, that said it is indeed a piss poor effort at packaging, but hey....... |

That's the way I feel. Youview doesn't even catch the ident a lot of times! Ultimately it is the programme that counts (Sherlock was brilliant!). If they want to make their brand look unappealing and drab that's up to them.

clearly the new idents are an easy 'win' in meeting the BBC new on screen diversity quota (15% ethnic minority, 8% LGBT, 8% disabled). In fact it's surely the only reason they've been commissioned.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/lat...2016/diversity As a gay man I've no idea where the 8% for us came from. I've never seen a reliable national estimate higher than 3%. It's all so patronising to minorities, to be honest. I wish the BBC would knock it on the head but it's become their new religion (and I say this as a big defender of the Beeb). |

The thing that I still don't understand is why a stills photographer was thought to be the person best placed to do idents for a television channel.
The whole thing about television is that moving images capture the eye. Even the Bats Wings ident moved. As did the potter's wheel. The swimmers looks as if they are being summoned for a photograph and then just start drifting away again. They move, but not in an interesting way. |

I'm not an ident obsessive by any means (although I'm sad to see the hippos gone
), so I couldn't care less what the BBC do with them. What struck me, though, as it often does, is the mealy-mouthed 'justification' for why they were changed. It's always words that only people in marketing and advertising (kill yourselves ) ever say. To wit:The director of BBC content Charlotte Moore said that it was important the channel idents moved with the times. She said: "What better way to demonstrate this than by commissioning Martin Parr, one of the most celebrated documentary photographers of our time, to create idents from a series of portraits that reflect and represent the rich diversity of communities living in the UK today?" In what way were the previous idents not with the times? It was hippos, bikes, dogs, kites etc. Are they now considered obselete and old-fashioned? Had Ms Moore simply said 'After ten years, it was time for something different', I could have let her off. As for 'What better way...', I wonder how long it took [someone] to craft that carefully worded bit of PR bollocks. Interesting that one of the idents was filmed in Bristol and another in Clevedon, which is only about twelve miles and thirty minutes away. Was Martin Parr trying to keep his travel expenses to a minimum or something? |
