I was a fan of Steps when they were at their peak when I was growing up back in the late 90s, and even now I still enjoy some of their songs.

However, I don't think a 'comeback' is a good idea at all. Their fans from back in the days were mostly people of a similar age to me (I'm 30 now) and I would imagine most people my age have moved on in our taste in music. And will the current generation of 8-13 year olds really take to Steps in 2017? I can't see it myself...

Bad idea.

Well if you had a bunch of kids take 1D seriously, then anything is possible.

Either you'll like it or you won't, don't let who they are put you off.

The sound is going to be more mature which is kind of obvious really. The problem is they are a pop band so it's notoriously difficult the older you are to get in with regards to chart success.

If they are happy with creating music and putting it out there then they'll be fine. If they are hoping for a return to their glory days then that may be difficult.
Take That did it with great undeniable songs so anything is possible for Steps.

However they did put out an album in late 2012 called 'Light Up the World' and it reached #32 and it hasn't been certified Silver (60,000 copies sold) which is minimum cert. This will likely be the result again unless they have an amazing single and promote it for success in 2017 not 1997 as many older acts still try for success the old way when they were top of the pops and haven't grasped the new chart rules/formula.
We'll see what happens they were always a positive band so at least that's good.

Claire has an amazing voice. Faye not bad too. Lisa and the guys not the best but that's always the way with bands even successful ones today. Their reunion tour only a few years back was brilliant, a sell our arena tour so they still commanded the crowds and had demand. In reality though they need to look to the kind of music Little Mix are doing, perhaps even a pop band duet to get them a decent scoring single as people know steps for cheesy dance.

1D are young people appealling to young people though

These guys are 40 plus now so who will their chart market be given its under 25s who control the top 40 now ?

I'm sure their die hard fans will love it but I can't see them doing a Take That.

I'm not sure how successful it will be. I don't think they'll gain any new fans and I can't see kids or young teens today taking to them. I bet if someone played some Steps songs from the 90s to a 2017 tween/teenager they would probably just laugh at them Maybe I should try asking some of my younger friends at university. Some of them were only babies when Steps were at their peak. I said the same thing about S Club 7. I loved them as a child but hardly ever listen to them now except when I'm feeling nostalgic. Still have my old tapes and CDs though - Bring It All Back was my first single

It'll be interesting to see what they do i think. They're obviously older and wiser now, but will they stick to what brought them to the table with the cheesy pop and dance routines or will they go for a more mature approach ?

I would imagine they'll bring back the routines for any live shows though - they'd be silly not to.

I'll definitely be going to the tour but not sure whether I want to hear new music from them. I'll at least give it a listen

I love Steps! I discovered them in 2011 during their Steps Reunion show and they have great voices together.

I think their Judas cover on tour sounded really good and gave a hint what they would sound like updated.

Wow they do look great! that could have been taken in 1998. H is the only one who hasn't aged well.

Is that her One for Sorrow look? It suits her.

I got the feeling Claire was driven more by pain than ambition like H. She came off worse I thought in her food related reality documentary because she was in full avoidance mode.

I loved Faye cutting to the chase. "Did you really hate us?"

Yeah pretty similar anyway. Much better than her long hair and appears to have kept the weight off for a while now

Lead Single - doesnt chart (who would stream it? haha)

I'm 18 and I only discovered Steps recently and I love them, I listen to them all the time now - although 5,6,7,8 has been a favourite of mine since I was a kid, everyone use to sing it at Primary School. But I am probably an exception, as I'm always listening to 90s music

Steps still have quite a huge fanbase imo compared to other 90s/00s bands that have reunited as they have achieved a lot better chart success + a lot of the members are still quite likeable / can sing. On that basis I reckon they could achieve some sort of chart success, however it's whether they can still give that commitment of promotion etc.

In their reunion show it was noted they used to rely heavily on tv since "they were rarely on radio". These days not only are there few variety shows for musical acts, they cant use the teen shows they used to be on either. Promo may be tough.

This acapella of Its the Way You Make Me Feel that they briefly showed on their doc really convinced me of their singing talent.

They performed at Heaven on New Years and went down well with everyone. Even the 18 year olds were singing along. Don't forget they started out 20 years ago, which is before those 18 year olds were born...

They'll definitely do well in the LGBT demographic anyway...

Cool I'm not a Steps fan myself, but I liked Say You'll Be Mine and their cover of Better The Devil You Know. How did everyone know it at primary school? I listen to a lot of 90s music too, but not all cheesy pop (unless I'm feeling nostalgic). I listen to stuff like Baby One More Time-era Britney, Spice Girls, some 90s dance and some classic R&B. I guess any chart success they could have now depends on the type of music they release. If it's still 90s-style cheesy pop I can't see it lasting.

Is the term "cheesy pop" meant to be "songs that arent blatantly talking about sex"? I have to admit I'm tired of it being used to dismiss Pop tunes. As an adult I was turned off by Britney's Lolita styling.

This is the paragraph from The Sun article.

“But the one thing everyone could agree on was it’s time for Steps to release new music and inject some fun back into the scene.

“Obviously the band have all matured in the two decades since they found fame, and so has their music."

I'm here for unashamed, tuneful Pop.

what a shocker ?

it will be interesting to see them back, we get to see all their fans in one concert that amazingly don't cringe at the thought of once being into them
