Eating out in a proper restaurant which only happened for birthdays.
I remember the local bistro as we used to call it being the place of choice for me every year and me thinking I was very classy having chicken corden bleu

Yes ! Me too.

There was a hierarchy with them too - the pinnacle was the Chinese one which had flat noodles which you fried in oil until they puffed up to make crispy noodles.

Chow Mein

yes, that was the best !

For me, my best example would be when my dad would treat me to a baguette from Greggs back in 1999 and I was 13 at the time. I had the dilemma of having to pick between grated cheese and salad or tuna/mayo and salad.
Sounds like early subway

I remember my dad used to always do the big shop and bring me back a box of Crackerjack sweets. They were caramel coated popcorn with peanuts with a mystery toy in each box.

My, I lived for those every week. It wasn't much compared to today's standards, but it made me very happy .

When I was young my father had an old great-aunt or something who was distantly related to us and lived at a seaside resort. I really disliked visiting her because she used to call us "half-caste" and expected little girls to sit quiet and not touch anything, not play with anything etc (I understand now of course that this is how things were in her day). But after we went to her house we would always get dairy ice cream from this place on the beach and I loved it, I thought it was the best ever. My sisters used to say it was just like a Mr Whippy and not worth going to her house for but I strongly disagreed

Oh my god, yes! I think they were called Mintola when I was little. Dark green pack. I used to eat these and watch Dynasty or was it Dallas feeling very posh and grown up. I would wear my special nightie and matching dressing gown for the event.

Oh, and if I was very lucky I'd be allowed to mix Refreshers in cream soda in a 70s/80s champagne glass and pretend I was Sue Ellen. Strangely Mum and Dad weren't a bit concerned that I appeared to see a fictional alco as a role model.
Ah Cream Soda, God I loved that stuff, especially with a dollop of vanilla ice cream mixed in it!

What were those fruit flavoured munchie shaped sweets called ?
I can't remember, the only ones I can think of are Spangles or Opal Fruits? Maybe someone else will know, we need a retro sweet thread

A day that I well remember was when sweets came off rationing which, checking on Wikipedia, was September 1953. We had a little shop next door and I was able to take my few pennies in and get some without any official restrictions.

Oh Cream Soda ! It would fizz up and make you belch and the fizz went up your nose !!
A big treat was to be allowed put a spoon of ice cream into a glass of Cream soda and eat it with a spoon from the glass !

Does anyone remember Rasberry Lemonade by Taylor Keith ? Or was it an Irish thing ? So fizzy that it made your mouth and nose tingle and unbelievably sweet

We rarely had fizzy pop or crisps in the house, but occasionally we'd go out and rent a video from the shop and we'd be allowed a packet of crisps and a bottle of lemonade to go with it.

Also, the village I grew up in only had small local shops so a trip out to the Big Asda at a nearby town was a treat. As soon as you walked in you could smell the fresh bread so we always bought a French Stick to have with butter when we got home.

I think Spangles were like fruit flavoured boiled sweets, like the shape and size of Tunes cough sweets. Opal fruits, are chewy.

Very occasionally my Mother wasn't there to make tea for us all.

My father would then rustle up a 'fish banjo' for us all, which we all thought was great.

(just a crumbed fish sandwich, in very good proper bread mind).

He would present it as the greatest treat ever, and we played along. I found it a bit boring to be honest.

My Dad used to work late and on Friday (well Saturday morning) we would find his brief case and in it would be three club biscuits, one for each of us. I used to bite the chocolate off all the way round.

When my Granny wrote she would sellotape three sixpences to the letter - flamin' fantastic.

Going to the Chinese for a sit in meal, looking at the fish tank and getting fruit juice for my starter.
I have a wee feeling we frequented the same Chinese! The one we went to as children had a fish tank and had the most delicious deep fried ice cream it's still going today

If I behaved myself during a shopping trip with my parents they'd give me a kp choc dips.
If I was extra well behaved I was allowed to eat it in the car.

When I was young the recognised King of Sweets was an Uncle Joe's Mint Ball as made in Wigan

They were like a liquoricey minty ball shaped boiled sweet

I found a tin of them a few years ago in the Foreign and Strange Foods Section of a local supermarket...........

Opal Fruits were made to make your mouth water............well known fact !

Didn't they just change their name to something else for marketing purposes and probably declined as a result as nobody knew what they were any more

Spangles were great sweets ............lots of different flavours

I always imagine Danny Baker droning on for hours about spangles and snake belts..........

After Dad played football he would get us a bottle of cream soda and little pots of cockles and prawns from the seafood van outside the pub and we'd have that in front of the telly watching Summertime Special.

Caramel wafers and green cream soda.

The lemonade man used to come around once a month. My mum would buy a bottle of green cream soda and a pack of caramel wafers for my and my cousins to have at the weekend.

Pickled onions.

My great Aunty had no kids so she always spoiled my mum and her brothers and sisters and later all their children. Whenever we'd go and visit she'd put on a picnic for us. Now there's be cakes and biscuits etc but the best bit was always a massive jar of pickled onions she has grown and pickled herself. We would fight tooth and nail for those!!

On Sunday we had a joint (which was made to last for eternity). Sunday evening tea was bread fried in the dripping and jelly from the meat with baked beans.
Bliss.

Thanks for trying planets but they really did look like Munchies/Mintola in shape and presentation. Only difference was the colour of the packaging and the fruit centre.

Gah I hate it when I remember something and I'm the only one who does, I'm so alone in this I feel like Miles Bennell in Invasion of the body snatchers ! ( being slightly melodramatic )
