I hope so!

Today is not the start though I'm feeling very delicate so a takeaway is ordered. Tomorrow though I'm back on it

I can only hope so!

My diets always start after my brother's birthday which is right at the beginning of January -- Mother always gets a big cake and insists we take a lot back home with us after a family gathering. I have no will power - might as well eat the cake before I get serious!

However I've been watching alot of youtube videos the past few days for easy healthy recipes, hopefully they will spur me on!

Well, 2016 was a total failure so here goes 2017.

Just weighed myself for the first time this year and I'm 5lbs heavier than the same time last year and 10lbs more than the lowest weight I managed.

My problem has never really been my diet - I eat quite healthily (OK, maybe portion size could be reduced but I hardly eat any junk food) and I drink a lot less than I used to it's but a total lack of exercise. I drive to work, sit at a desk all day, drive home then sit on the sofa until bed time.

So, first step of the year is that I've just dug out my hiking boots (probably not used in 2 years) and I'm going out for a walk. In my 20s I used to be able to do 8-10 miles without thinking about it but for now I'd settle for a 3 mile round walk to Tesco which I would normally just jump in the car for.

My best advice for anyone wanting to lose weight and to STAY at a healthy weight is to completely separate your eating regime from your emotions.

Eat ONLY when your body wants food, not because of an 'occasion' (eg. Birthday cake) or to cheer yourself up, etc.

2017 is going to be the year for me - I hope. A reduction in carbs, no cakes, biscuits or sweets in the house, and smaller meal portions. A stronger gym regime, less time on the couch, more pushing my limits with running & cycling.

I'm coming to a similar conclusion - basically that if you have a persistent weight problem that the only long term solution is to completely cut out any eating you do for enjoyment. The BIB is a bit misleading though because for many overeaters their body is craving unhealthy food all the time - it's not the birthday cake that's the problem, it's all the other cake your body tells you it wants after every meal.! It takes a long period of hard withdrawal symptoms before that goes away and you are left with 'only' the emotional addiction.

Considering how shite I did last year, probably not!

Will have a go though I am the worst for emotional eating and I'm always in a grump about something or other.

Me me me! I will!

Went from 26st 7lbs last February to 17st 11lbs before Christmas. Target is 13st, perhaps a few pounds under.

Done some serious damage in 2-3 weeks, up 10 lbs last time I checked on the 27th. Mixed feelings about that. It is quite a bit but then I know I can shift that again quite easily so in a way it's not that big a deal to me. Still, I am going to hold off weighing myself until February the 1st so that I never find out exactly how much I did put on this festive period.

Im in! I cant find the scales but im pretty sure im as heavy as ive ever been. Have lost it a couple of times before and slowly put it all back on again. However i'm getting on a bit now, the risks of potential health impacts are increasing, so its important i stick to it this time.

I will be going for manageable lifestyle changes that i can keep up and hopefully a steady weight loss.

I've never dieted in my life but I've had the most traumatic year of my life and put on a stone.
I've been confirm eating and drinking far too much and now realise enough is enough and I need to get my life back on track.
I'm starting tomorrow with a 3 day juice fast and then going onto a low calorie diet after that. I'm going to do dry January as well and aiming to have that stone off by thd end of February

Talking of dry January - i'm interested in hearing what impact other people have with their weight when they stop drinking.

Personally - if I only stop drinking and don't change my diet then it has virtually no effect. I remember my dad looking at me confused once when I told him that I hadn't had a drink in 3 months and he replied "but my friends all lost loads of weight when they stopped drinking".

Hello thought I might join in here,
I've put on too much weight the last few years I used to be slim but curvy although always thought I was fatter than I was.
I'm a comfort eater and have been doing so rubbish at slimming world but I think something has clicked in me now to actually do something about it!
I'm determined 2017 will be the year of a new slimmer me 🙂

I'm not doing a dry January this year but I'm going to try for a dry-ish one with no more than one or two sessions a week. The one thing I am cutting out this month is cheese. It's my biggest food weakness and I must have eaten my own wodyweight of the stuff over the last few weeks.

For me, when I stop drinking or cut down the main cause of weight loss is that I eat better. Nobody goes out for 6 pints then thinks "Mmm.. I fancy a salad!". Another impact is that after a few says I find that I sleep a lot better too. On the other hand, I really like beer so a balanced diet really has to be about the quality of what I drink rather than the quantity.

I lost 4 stone last year without giving up my weekend beers. Again it all comes down to calories consumed. I was in a deficit all week so the weekend beers had no effect.

This was in the DM today - it had no impact on their weight loss really, in fact one of them put on a couple of pounds. When I stop drinking I do lose weight but also do a cal controlled diet.

I will join in if that is alright. I have a long journey ahead of me, not one I expect to complete this year, but I would like to make a good start.

What sort of foods are people going to focus on eating and avoiding? Any tips would be most welcome.

Thanks for the article - it was really interesting reading about the different people's intake and their medical results. I often think that the main problem with our approach to healthy living is that it doesn't take into account the vastly different genetic physiology we all have and how our bodies react different. I know that everyone has the potential to be healthy but it takes different things for different people - it's like saying that every fit person has the potential to climb Everest, but the training you need will be completely different depending on your bodies ability to do certain things.

I've been to slimming world and put on half a pound since I went the Tuesday before Christmas so I'm actually quite happy it wasn't more. Onwards and upwards now! No
More Pinot Grigio for me til at least Saturday and I'm going to stick to plan!

Put on 5lbs over Xmas, and am now dead on 12st, which is not good when you are a short bodied short arse at 5ft 6".

Now that all the Christmas period is over, no chocolate, no mince pies, I have started to get on the salads again, really want to get back to about the 10st 7lb mark that I was when I was a heavy smoker. It is going to be tough, but hopefully I will pull it off.

Quite a few posts here about weight; I don't have to remind everyone that it's not all about weight, right? People need to be of good weight, but that's a mix of fat and muscle.
I'm 5-foot 11 (6-foot on a tall day) I was 81kg's before Christmas (that's about 12.7 stone - I think?), haven't weighed in this year yet (I ate a lot over Christmas), but it's better to be a healthy 14 stone with fat and muscle than an unhealthy 10 stone with more skin and bones. Just a friendly reminder, I'm sure most are already aware.

In short, don't focus too much on what you weigh, cause you'll always be focusing on the wrong thing. Focus on what you can do; that extra weight, that extra mile, that little bit quicker, than little bit longer (etc etc)

Very true. My aim in life is to not have an 'X' in my clothes sizes and for my size/fitness to not be a barrier to anything I want to do. I'm not too fussed about the number on my scales.
