Are you just stating a fact about the Guardian demographic there?

- Sorry, but LOL! It really isn't. It, and it's readers take themselves very seriously though! It's as leftwing bias as DM is right.

The guardian is far from being a quality paper.

It's nowhere near as nasty though. And it is a serious quality newspaper.

Well, it's no surprise that people with very right-wing views will despise Owen Jones. He should take it as a badge of honour.

I generally don't hold right wing, or even very right wing, views though.

He's a whinging cry baby and I really do despise him.

You do not have to be 'very' right wing to see him for what he is! 'Badge of honour'? For what?

I don't agree with everything he says, but on the whole he seems to be a decent person.

That's rather sad.

Why does it need defending, their website is one of the most viewed in the world. If I were in charge, i'd be quite happy as clearly lots of people like it.

Well, it does arouse controversy because of the way it tends to demonise certain groups such as Muslims, immigrants, refugees, benefit claimants, High Court judges....

Be interesting to see how its fans would defend that kind of thing, or if they'd just deny it.

There was a dreadful article in there a couple of months or so ago - really racist. It was highlighted in a thread here on DS. Trouble is, I think it was embedded in a thread about something else, so can't find the damn thing. I do know it was one of the most racist articles I've ever read. Awful stuff.

I'm sure lot's of people do like it, however it would be a mistake to attribute the raw numbers of it being the most viewed newspaper website, with universal popularity and love. Many thousands of those views each day are people shocked and sharing the ridiculously OTT stories amongst the internet. I mean hell, there must be a Daily Mail thread every day on Reddit which is one of the biggest discussion forums in the world. Obviously the users are going to then click on the link and view it.

So absolutely from a buisness standpoint, props to the Daily Mail for the amount of click bait. However that does not correlate automatically with journalistic standards.

I personally think you are are deluded or naive.

The quality of the journalism in the DM is good however it is is very "old school" right wing appealing to the old Tory bigots and golf club racists who make up most of the readership.

Balanced it is not!

Don't worry that troll poster has since been banned. That tripe from their mouth has been washed away.

I would say that the quality of either depends greatly on whether you agree with their agenda or not. The transparent agenda of both is so risible that neither should be taken seriously at all.

DM - right wing
Gaurdian - left wing

I read the dm for the gossip pages, not for proper news stuff. It's good at getting people angry though and they know that results in more views. so all those people who moan and call it daily fail/hiel are doing them a favour everytime they click it to be outraged.

Maybe more like

Telegraph - right wing
Times - right wing
Mail - right wing
Express - right wing
Sun - right wing
Mirror - centre left
Guardian - centre left

There aren't really any mass-market left-wing papers as far as I can see.

Richard Littleton is an excellent columnist. It is amusing to see a person who uses the particular swearword attributed to him in your post thinks themselves superior to a daily mail reader.
In any case the web site and printed paper are quite different.

I know some people refer to it as such but I seriously doubt anyone can realistically call the Guardian/Observer centre left, it comes pretty much neck and neck with the Independent on leftism. I agree the Daily Mail is right wing, but it is the polar opposite to the Guardian which makes that left wing, in my view at least. Very few newspapers have a centre view in my opinion. I read The Sun, Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror pretty much every day, and all of them seem to be solidly one direction or the other, with not much centre. Also when I read the Mirror it seems solidly left as well, maybe not as much as the Guardian and Independent but there doesn't seem much centre or unbiased about it either. Also what about The I and Morning Star ? I haven't read them but I hear they are solidly left too.

But people can't blame the right wing for the Guardian (and Observer) being the only left wing newspaper left (although I would add The Mirror, The I, and Morning Star to that list as well), it is a business, and clearly there are not enough people who think the same way to buy it, either that or they do all their reading of it online. The Independent went down the pan (paper version) because it sold next to nothing. People on the right wing are not stopping these papers being sold, it is down to the people to buy it to keep them alive.

Absolutely. It's the idea that we need the Mail as a counter to the alleged left-wing bias of the press that concerns me. If you read all the papers apart from the Daily Mail, you'd still end up reading a lot more conservative opinions than progressive. And some of those conservative views would be in the Guardian, which is why I wouldn't put it firmly on the left wing.
