I'm not picking on a bad performance, or her talent. I'm picking on her decision to just not bother and go her merry way because she felt like it.

I'm not, and never will be, someone who can hit the right notes/keys without sounding like I'm being strangled so maybe I'm a fine one to talk-HOWEVER.... surely singing those whistle register notes for a long time from when Mariah started her career... that will lead to her voice in the higher range(s) becoming weaker? Or am I mistaken?

I can't believe some of her fans are still trying to defend this.
What happened is simple. The backing vocals she planned on miming to for Emotion didn't start so she was left with nothing to do as she couldn't sing in her real voice so for two minutes she walked around the stage in a huff. Then the backing track for We Belong Together - with 2005 vocals did start up and she mimed the whole thing (very badly) but knowing she ****ed up she threw a fit and walked off. Thats it. I agree that alcohol probably played a factor in this as you get the feeling she was half cut just from the way her dancers have to keep holding her up. |

Yet her dancers seemed able to hear the music. Why do you think they could hear and Mariah couldn't.
As you're a musician I'm sure you're aware of the importance of doing a)a rehearsal and b) a soundcheck. Perhaps you could explain why Mariah doesn't bother to do either of these things. Could it be because she's lazy and unprofessional and doesn't care about her reputation as a talented singer? And in answer to your previous question, she has a 5th option. Retire and stop taking money under false pretences ie pretending she can still sing live when everyone (apart from her rapidly decreasing bunch of hardcore sycophantic delusional fans) know that isn't the case. By all means, trade on her celebrity and do her reality tv show. Sell her own perfume line, celebrity endorsements, etc. There's nothing wrong with any of that. It's surprising to me (as a layman) to hear a musician as yourself accept and excuse such low standards, tbh. |

Yes she did mine some of the time. She did mime the climaxes to some of her songs but some of them she did sing live like My all and she sounded good. She also did do the whistle notes on some of the songs like heartbreaker.
I don't think her range has diminished. I think it's more of a reliability issue. She can still hit the same notes but not in a live setting. In the studio she can have as many attempts as she needs to hit a note. In a live setting she only gets one shot and she isn't sure if she can hit the note or not so she will use a pre-recorded track. Yes her voice isn't the same as it once was but I don't think she should be crucified. She can still sing, lets not say she can't sing anymore because she can and still sounds nice when she sing she live. If this was the first time it could be put down to 'technical difficulties', but it isn't. Just seen your other point about her instagram account. Lol, as if that means anything. She admitted herself on a tv show that she rarely rehearses. Out of interest, are you one of her 'people', or just a fan. Either way, it's entirely up to you. Accept low standards if you wish, some of us aren't going to. |

There have been issues with her backing tracks in the past and she was able to sing live, like when the touch my body track got stuck at GMA at the climax. She had to just sing it live. She can sing the song live as she has been doing on her tour. There are ways to even get out of singing the majority of the song live, like singing a line, talking to the audience, putting the mic out to the audience, sing another line etc. That is another option to wing it if you are not prepared to sing the song live. However if you have a technical fault such that you can't hear the track of the vocals then you can't do anything.
As I've said, she could have just told the production team to stop the music and attempted an acapella but she went with it. Dick Clark Production could have limited the bad press by cutting the feed over to the west coast and a simple apology after going back. They also could have cut it out off the west coast feed. And that's where I agree, very very slightly, with Mariah's team that they went for ratings by replaying it. Mariah can sing Emotions live, I saw it for myself on tour. It's not 1991 Mariah singing Emotions but she can sing the song. She needs to get Jim Wright at a piano and go live on Facebook or YouTube, just her and a piano singing an arrangement of the song. |

Oh come on. She's been busted quite a few times now. There's plenty of evidence on youtube.

Sometimes she sounds like crap when she sings live. I'll readily admit that. However on this occasion there was a technical fault.
Now, can you answer one question? How did the dancers hear the music(presumably they need to hear something to dance to) and Mariah didn't? |

Starting to think this is all a big setup, because she's still banging on about it for publicity, when most stars would go in to hiding.
its an unusual move, but maybe her management thought that she has the 'crazy' persona to pull this stunt off, and her sales of new records are next to non existent these days anyway, and her classics will still sell regardless. |

Go into hiding?
It's a botched performance with "sound issues" It's not like she fell off the stage drunk, punched a dancer, peed herself, called the audience a bunch of <insert profanity of your choice> , was over heard using hate speech, said the f word or had a massive wardrobe malfunction. I don't know about set up , I don't think she'd set out to make a show of herself or if the organisers would really be vindictive enough to sabotage her - stranger things have happened though. But I will say this and it's a point that's already been made this has got people talking about her one way or another. Her responses will be watched and get her more publicity.. if the performance had gone without a hitch no one would even be talking about it. There'd be a daily mail article about her cleavage half way down the sidebar and that would be it. She may as well use the negative press for something |

I've just watched it the clip for the first time. There's clearly sound issues...even when she's speaking through the mic the sound is very subdued. The first song (Emotions) she was obviously going to sing live as the backing track just consisted of a few backing vocals on the chorus and the whistle notes at the end (which she can do live still as I've seen her in concert recently). The surprise though was 'We Belong Together'....she was planning on singing the whole song live but over a backing track/vocals. I don't understand why as the chorus and verses wouldn't take it out of her...it's not until the end of the song that she really needs to belt it out. I did find that strange. Anyway, it was clearly a technical issue as again on 'We Belong Together' her voice was so low when she was singing over the track/vocals, as if the mic wasn't turned up.
A few people here have said she has no career anymore, which I find ridiculous...not to mention it's not true. She's not long ago finished a huge tour and she's also still one of the biggest selling female artists of all time. She also still makes and sells albums. The thing is, Mariah in her prime was huge but known for her vocal ability and ginormous range rather than elements such as her tone. She could hit all the notes. With a voice like that there was no way she was going to be able to hit those whistle notes forever (certain ones she still can though). She's had an absolutely huge career and has achieved pretty much everything there is to achieve. |

She's actually lost a lot of weight and looks good for her age, but hey we can't let facts get in the way of a chance to slag her off.

She'll be laughing this off and she's still a good singer. There are thousands of clips on youtube of her singing live.
It seems from the clip on NYE that her microphone is clearly on so I'm guessing she would dip in and out of some songs. We Belong Together track had lyrics so clearly planned to lip sync that, however the others were just instrumental. |

Her career has been dead for ages. She needs to get a clue from Celine or Britney and get a residence in Vegas for a few years.

And if what that other poster said is correct then Mariah did show up for soundcheck so there you go. But nah, let's ignore first hand experience of this and just call her a has-been based on one technical disaster. |

As for "soundcheck" while I would normally agree, do you really think major popstars like Mariah Carey and other huge names like Beyoncé, Kanye West, Rihanna and Lady Gaga rock up for soundcheck? No. That's another sound engineer job when it comes to major, major acts like that. Mariah probably just expected to turn up, sing and then leave again, but as I say, the sound engineer royally messed up.
however tv shows and special events can be different, and typically with tv shows, particularly those broadcast live, artists will mime or perform to playback rather than live, as it usually reduces the chances of things going wrong beyonce had a lip sync issue miming to the star spangled banner in front of the president and her career has survived so it's hardly going to end mariah's career, even if it does appear to be going down the pan with her resorting to reality tv and doing a joint tour instead of a headlining one she's put on weight too, but she still looks pretty good. she probably isn't wearing the most flattering outfits for her size and age though |

Her team has also said that her lyric promoter, which would have enabled her to at least sing in time, wasn't turned on.
I imagine there are bits of truth from DCP and Team Mariah. I don't see what her weight has to do with it either. I think she looked pretty good on NYE |
