It's not the lenghth of time receiving the money that's the issue here; a more immediate question is, if they completed their tax return on line then they should know then and there how much is due or much will be repaid, so the repayment (whenever it comes) should not have come as a surprise.

Oh yeah they did and in fact paid the bill immediately as the OP says! I am not sure how there is a refund if they paid the bill correctly

Aww, I was looking forward to sharing details of my £300,000 refund I received on boxing day after submitting my tax thingamjig on Christmas day.

Now our fully knowledgeable member won't be able to praise me!
