I am surprised not more research has been done on this. Spend so much on looking at other planets- we don't look at under the sea. They found so many unusual fish at the bottom. It seems crazy we have not taken advantage of this, set up a dwelling at the bottom and go on daily fish hunts. I know the water pressure is enough to absolutely crush down the bottom, but some breakthroughs must have been made?

Just think, if there is going to be more water on the planet, and global warming, and all that. it seems the next logical step.
Now for some posters to feed me on the science, and the unpragmaticness of it.

It'll happen by year 3000.

Me too. There's no accusations, just friendly crustaceans.

I seem to remember a lot of work bring done in this in the 60s abd 70s, a lot of feature films on the subject or it playing a major part, a lot of documentaries' and other "infotainment"...but it does seem to have died a death with the end of the original Cold War and the construction phase of the North Sea oil fields.

Me too but am not sure if I'd opt for an octopus's garden in the shade though.

That's your solution to everything to move under the sea. It's not gonna happen!!

The science is pretty established, ie projects here-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underwater_habitat

Looked at the challenges of living in different habitat styles, mostly pressurised vs unpressurised and the effects on the inhabitants. But that also translates into costs and risks. So this-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturation_diving

reduces some costs by having the environment and divers pressurised at the depth required. It's used in off-shore commercial diving to extend 'bottom time' for divers as well. It makes the engineering simpler, but has risks especially in emergency, ie having to decompress when you leave. Alternative is pressurised where the environment's at surface pressue. That's easier on the occupants but harder on the engineering to avoid leaks/crushing.

All need some form of surface support to send down power, air, food etc although systems developed for submarines mean they could become more self-sufficient. But the cost is too high for anything other than research or commercial work.

You say about the costs, but how much is being spent to other planets!

A few years ago there were plans to build a hotel under the sea in Dubai which required a train to get to.

I'm not sure what happened or if it was just a pipe dream.

If they ever get round to building it, I'd pay good money to go there. I'm a little frightened by the sea but this attracts me.

The poor migrant builders get it tough enough on their above sea projects. Imagine getting them to build under water!

I see this as an exciting property development opportunity!
(for vegans/vegetarians only)

Not enough! But oddly, it's probably harder to try create an underwater town as say, "New Dunwich" than it would be to build a habitat on Mars. Mainly to prevent this kinda thing happening-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_(u...m_cylinder.jpg

Or given old Dunwich is in fairly shallow water, a bit easier. But still expensive and who'd pay other than Lovecraft fans with no sense of geography. But NASA's done subsea research to work on understanding space-type issues, and there's crossovers with stuff like life support systems and other sustainability gubbins. But keeping the sea out is one of engineering's wicked problems & it's probably a lot easier to slap a patch on to keep air in in space than keeping high pressure water out at depth.

But think of an Amazon drone-filled future! Or with enough customers, they could branch out into mini-sub delivery. Dunno if Subway would sponsor that.

But I've often fancied the idea of 101 things to do with a useless off-shore windfarm. Stick gabbions between the piles, backfill with landfill and create new islands! Sadly, they're still in UK waters, so don't have all the potential tax breaks a fully off-shore land would have

There's very little to take advantage of, per se. Exploratory science of that kind - discovering new deep sea species and the like - is fascinating stuff, and it expands our scientific knowledge of the deep sea, but it doesn't really push science forward very much. That is to say, considering the high cost there is a negligible benefit, and there are other things for society to spend its time and money on.

It's the same reason that we haven't gone back to the Moon (yet).
