How about Moving The One Show to 1PM - a bit like Pebble Mill was?
Here's an idea: Move The One Show (or any non-news based chat/discussion show - Breakfast doesn't count) to 1PM - thereby bringing back the old "Pebble Mill at One" feel to it. As for the 1 O'Clock news, bump that up to Mid-day or 12:30.
The One Show to me certainly feels more of a daytime show than a teatime show anyway. As for what to replace The One Show in the evenings with - any ideas? |

The One Show is very popular at 7 pm.
Often in the BBC1 top ten shows, and can top the list. It covers fully the BBC PSB requirements of entertain, education, current affairs, its flexible and can adjust to breaking news and does a lot for charity. It's a good alternative to the ITV soap fest of up to 90 minutes per night. Alex is in this week then starts her maternity leave with Michelle and Andrea covering. Pebble Mill was ok, when there was nothing on at 1 pm bar news , watch with mother, and the test card. All replacements so far, have never done any better, but often worse. If you break the habit if it bring on everynight, you loose the anchor to BBC1 that night, and hand other networks thoose viewers. TOS is good vale as it as it's own BBC studio and team, and being on every weeknight, averages down costs. A replacement would cost far more thst the budget can cover. |

True, I just feel the tone of the show is just wrong for the timeslot, even in the summer months when the evenings are lighter. It has a very lunchtime-feel about it.
In summer they can go on location, the nature items are truly wonderful. It's habit viewing, some do not like it, but actually it's a good alternative to ITV soapfest. It's a good teatime show as you get home, eat, can nip in and out of it, as each item is only 2/3 minutes, if you do not like one item, the next is along in three minutes. |

Better still nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

It is a popular programme with quite a sizeable audience which will make it easier to get guests and convenient place to launch things. The news is at 13:00h and I can't see them moving that and it would then be competing with ITV's morning programme and their lunchtime one for guests. Most people are at work during the day so the potential audience is lower apart from the brainless ones who watch daytime all day long. |

I do wonder if the the OP remembers Pebble Mill at One with rose tinted spectacles, it was at best a filler show, or even a retirement home for tired or just tiresome presenters.
The majority of guests were forgettable the moment the interview ended. Actually so I suppose the One Show is the ideal substitute. |

I also used to enjoy Saturday Night At The Mill.
BBC1 News is now established at 1 pm, and Bargain Hunt typically at 12.15 which is popular. If I recall correctly, in the past BBC1 was:- Testcard. 12.45 News. 1pm Pebble Mill. 1.45 Watch with mother. 2 pm Testcard. Pebble Mill would duplicate Loose Women now, and would displace, Bargain Hunt, or the News, or Doctors, which is filmed at The Mill. The One Show is very settled and popular at 6.58 and on a three year commission, it's not going anywhere soon. |

I only liked TOS when Adrian and Christine were doing it. It feels too bland now. Perhaps they should rebrand it to 'The Oneness Show' ...

Although I'm too young to remember Nationwide but I heard that The One show is based on that rather than Pebble Mill. Also wasn't Nationwide on the evenings?

The OP wasn't even born when Pebble Mill at One was on.

I'd also say The One Show is similar to S4C's Heno, which has been a 6/7pm slot for the last few decades. *Note there was Wedi 7 that replaced Heno for a short time.

I think getting guests up to Birmingham may be an issue, nothing against Birmingham, but celebrities often fly in and fly out of London. Hence This Morning moving to London.

Nationwide was on at 5.55 post a 5.40 News, and had a Regional news opt out first from 5.55 to 6.20 then went Nationwide. The 6.20 bit to when it ended, ( varied), was close to The One Show, and included segments like Watchdog. Quote:
It was a very good programme and forerunner of quite a number of programmes on all channels by using the reception area as a studio. Very popular, just like The One Show.

Of course they would need a studio in Birmingham!

Adrian and Christine became self indulgent and felt they were too good for it, and fell flat on their faces when they left. A bit like Phil and Holly on This morning. To big for their own boots. Or egos.

Bleakley and Chiles got greedy when ITV bought them, she tried to squeeze more out of the BBC and they refused to get involved in a bidding war. She has done well for herself as the archetypical WAG. The mindless moans about The One Show get boring, they manage to cover a wider range of subjects than probably any other similar programme. |

Nationwide evolved from the Tonight programme, can't remember the timing but Tonight, Nationwide, Pebble Mill and other shorter run programmes have all influenced The One Show.

Alex seems to have her last week, this week, with Michelle and Andrea listed from next week. |
