Some of the things on The One Show can be interesting content but it's permanent place at 7pm does seem to have had the effect of reducing BBC ONE's effort for primetime and that's probably where the moans come from, it's light, magaziney and incidental and not really about serious TV entertainment but prime time did used to mean that and from 7 onwards.

In the 90's there used to be game shows, quiz shows, Holiday , This Is Your Life, Watchdog all in that slot, then was followed by Eastenders and sitcoms, many of which became the nations favourites such as Keeping Up Appearances, 2 Point 4 Children & The Brittas Empire. BBC ONE just feels like it has a whole lot less on now for prime time and The One Show permanently being on at 7pm definitely feels part of that.

So what is the answer? Maybe having prime time back on Fridays at least.

Is 19:00h "primetime"? I would have thougt that would be slightly later but does it matter on the BBC, "primetime" only matters on the commercial channels because they will charge more for advertising then.

It should be remembered that the Tonight programme, the original daily evening magazine programme, was on at roughly the same time.

BBC has had all sorts of programmes on at that time.

Often there are repeats at 7.30 on Monday and Friday and sometimes at 8.30 Friday, these include Fake Britain from daytime. The sheriffs are coming is on 8 pm Wednesday which is a repeat. Post 10.45 is typically all repeats so that also could expand primetime, instead of repeats of Graham Norton, or Who do you think you are.

So plenty of airtime to fill up for thoose style shows, I would like Holiday a comedy, Top of the pops Ground force, etc back, but, it's money not airtime.

The 7 pm slot did OK with Britas Empire but that was long long ago, and typically viewers were low, in the 7 pm slot. They tried Eldorado, ( started poor was getting better, and axed), they tried Wogan, worked for years, fell back,

TOS has done OK in the slot, and covers BBC PSB requirements. It keeps costs down, by regularly being on. Dropping Friday wouldn't reduce costs, as all the team are still employed and the studio is there, it just increases the average costs of four shows a week.

The repeat slots been to be filled first, but that's £££££££

Not even sure what is meant by "having prime back on Friday". A programme obviously gains by being in a fixed time Monday to Friday, sounds like someone does not like the programme and just trying to find ways to sabotage it. I can think of lots of programmes that I would like to drop or move to an unpopular slot when no one watching.

I have an open mind, see your view and Bills view, I showed there is plenty of space on BBC1 for shows Bill mentions. Yes agree with you TOS has best value by being on Monday to Friday, and creates habit viewing, it is an anchor to the night. A bridge between popular Regional news and say Eastenders.

Like anything the bottom line is budgets and cost and lack of funding.

Repeats could be cut if there was more money, there is free airtime on BBC1 to cover Bills suggestions.

But drop the Friday One Show and you break the habit of watching TOS, we see it when Wimbledon is on. It's a current three year commission, it's not going anywhere.

Or... repeat The One Show at 1pm the next day ?
No - please don't give them ideas. There are already far too many "chances to see again" or repeats as we know them!

The main issue I have with TOS is the sheer randomness of it sometimes. It's most noticeable when they have a big name US guest. I don't know what the guest is told about the show but it appears that they think they are coming onto something like the Lenno or Fallon show in the States. The look on their faces when they are shut down after a couple of minutes fo a film about the mating habits of water voles or 19th century canals is priceless. You can almost see the "WTF am I doing here" look in their eyes!

I would much prefer that at least one show per week was set up as a proper chat show and that show biz type guests appered on this, thereby leaving the remainder of the week as the pot pourri that it is, and which by all accounts seems to work.

I'd also say The One Show is similar to S4C's Heno, which has been a 6/7pm slot for the last few decades. *Note there was Wedi 7 that replaced Heno for a short time.
Does that have a Welsh woman with a shrill voice as well ?

Used to watch the One show, but can't bring myself to nowadays.

I must admit I have noticed this before.
That said they still get some big names on most nights even if it is sometimes BBC talent.

It depends I have seen quite a few really big name Hollywood stars who seem to have enjoyed it being different from all the other shows they go on and not having to do their usual act. Sometimes they have got far more out of them than the proper chat shows like Norton (which I have given over watching). The one who collects typewriters seemed to enjoy the film they showed about them and they then had a girl who writing a book, a few week's later they showed that he had sent her a vintage typewriter to use.

There is odd one who "does not get it" but I suspect they will be as useless on a "proper chat show" anyway or at least will just do the same performance they do on all of that type of chat show.

Also the programme seems to have really good research teams (there are apparently three teams) and they regularly come up with bits of archive film that people often have never seen before and want a copy.

I can't watch the one show it makes me cringe with embarrassment. Honestly if i'm flicking around the channels and see its on I get anxiety as I know i'm only seconds away from Alex Jones saying something incredibly stupid to a Hollywood movie star. So frantically I have to switch away from BBC1 and then I can relax again.

Truly awful television.

More often it's a Hollywood Movie star saying something incredibly stupid to Alex, as they are only there to plug their Movie.
