New soul station Delite Radio
At 7am this morning Delite Radio replaced Crackers Radio on DAB in central London & Central Manchester . A Strong line up of Soul DJs including Ex Chiltern soul man Louie Martin & a couple of Ex Solar Djs . I do sense a bit or resentment building up between some of the various Soul stations looking at some of the social media posts .

It's sad if it's come to resentment. There's nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition, and perhaps some people need to realise this- surely it's better to concentrate your efforts on being the best station, rather than wasting time slagging off the others- it makes no-one look good.

Audio quality very poor on the stream, too soft. Presenter microphones are too soft and lots of off-level issues. Use some decent processing!

Crackers Radio Fresh is an internet soul radio station from London Greek Radio's George Power. Presumably with an agreement they will not go on DAB and dont seem to have applied for a London community FM (or AM) licence but there is a Greek Beat application which could rival LGR.
After the original Crackers Radio was sold and relaunched as Delite Radio in January 2017, Crackers relaunched with a fresher format of soul music and a new presenting line-up. |

What is it with radio stations and terrible web site design?
Crackers' is bad enough but I don't think I've ever seen anything quite as inept as this: http://www.deliteradio.com/schedule/ |

I'm friends with quite a few soul djs and some of the bitching, infighting and badmouthing I've seen over the last few years is unbelievable.

We've gone from no stations playing classic soul to saturation on DAB in London. Mi-Soul, Solar and the aforementioned Delite are three that spring to mind.
The minimuxes have allowed small scale operators to get on the platform, but surely two out of the three will eventually close or return to being online only? |

And don't forget Mi-Soul & Starpoint have applied for FM licences . My view I don't see them getting one . In Mi-Souls case how can a community station be London wide & DAB in Brighton also . |

And tuning in this morning via DAB+, the sound quality is awful. It sounds like it's being played through an empty dustbin. It's at 48k AAC v2, so should really be OK- not wonderful, but OK. Union Jack on SDL sounds far better at half that bitrate.

The joint listenership of Kiss FM and Choice FM was 2.3m. BBC1Xtra has a national listenership of Reading inbetween the lines it, plus stations like House and Starpoint will also remove the audience for the London FM pirates (as Rinse did) which Ofcom are keen to do.
over 1m people. All three stations specialised in music trends that have evolved out of Soul music. In 2013, Choice FM, a station playing Hip Hop and R&B (part of the Mi-Soul output) was rebranded as Capital Xtra, targeting the same demographic as Kiss FM (16-24 years old). While this change was met with much criticism from its 680,000 listeners (now having an average age of 30), it has also removed our closest competitor from the market, which is now even more extensively underserved. RAJAR research for the 2nd quarter of 2014 highlighted that their listenership had dropped by over 300,000 (47%). These are listeners waiting for Mi-Soul to launch an alternative on FM. |

Ofcom have probably a difficult task with the 21 applications chasing the few FM frequencies, but cutting down pirates will be important.
If Mi Soul do get an FM licence to effectively go after Choice's old audience who might have gone to FM pirate stations (and don't have DAB or internet sets) they may feature more hip hop and reggae than classic soul? |

. They're will always be an audience for pirate radio as long as fm radio exists, for many reasons. Once fm is switched off, things might change that, especially with these dab minny muxes. Time will tell. |
