My dog hurt his back the other day and the vet has given him metacam but he's throwing up.

I'm giving him it with food but just wondering should I persevere? Does it ease off? He usually gets rimadyl but my vet's trying not to prescribeit anymore due to adverse effects (which, strangely he never had with it!)

Stop it, it can have the same side effects as rimadyl so go back to the vets and ask for rimadyl or an alternative. It can damage their stomach as well as liver and it's clearly not suiting your dog, he shouldn't be throwing it back. Hope he's ok x

Metacam is for pain and is an anti inflammatory.
It is notorious for causing liver damage and it can make dogs vomit.
I have cautiously accepted a Metacam shot twice in my elderly dog who actually already has liver damage. I was between a rock and a hard place as she needed pain relief. Strangely, she did not show any side effects. If anyone knows of a safer alternative I would be interested to know.
I believe the advice it to stop it if it is causing the dog to vomit. I certainly would.

Thanks guys, I've not given a dose today and will call the vet tomorrow. He's been quite miserable today and couldnt even keep down scrambled eggs, his favourite. On the plus side it means he's resting the strain in his back.

I wouldn't continue to give him medication that makes him sick, ask the vet for a different medication, there are several alternatives.

For many things I don't feel pain meds for animals a good idea.

They gave my boy some when he was "done" He had projectile diarrhoea with them it was awful . If they are supposed to rest and not jump around then pain meds are not the best idea for them. If pain is lessoned then they will think they are ok to jump and play.

Im not talking about old slow dogs btw before I get jumped on. I feel pain meds after ops on young animals a money making thing.. I was charged £10 for something he should imo never have had. I gave him the one dose ( who wants to see their beloved pet in pain , right? ) then threw it away as my senses told me a dog who is not feeling pain is not going to rest if needed.

Just a quick update.

The vet did some bloodsand his kidneys arent working as well as they should. Apparently metacam can affect the kidneys this way. Especially in older dogs whose kidneys aren't working as great as a younger dog. He's in doggie hospital on a dripand they will retest his bloods after fluids.

I would urge anyone prescribed this medication or similar to consider a blood test before administering them. It might be worth the few pounds extra in the long run. It was never raised when we first attended but what I'm learning now is horrifying.

Sorry duffsdad.
I would say do your research on EVERYTHING a vet wants to give - especially steroids, pain relief like metacam and even things like diuretics. I've learnt the hard way.
There are things you can do to help the kidneys - supplements, home cooking, sub q fluids so don't despair. Been there, got the T shirt. Hope your boy is feeling better soon.

Thank you, would you mind if I ask you for advice once he comes home?
