"So called" religion? Is the OP trying to suggest that Islam is not a religion?

Smells like yet another Muslim bashing thread started by yet another ignoramus.

this is a bit like the self-destruct procedure at the end of Alien with the Nostromo, only much easier on a DS account. You know, it happens to be very cold in deep space.

I don't really feel any different about your average Muslim as I do an average Christian. In any case I feel someone's religion is totally irrelevant to me, the only exception being if someone's visiting so I try to be accommodating to their lifestyle, the same as I would be if said lifestyle was chosen for non-religious reasons, e.g. tee-totalism or vegetarianism.

I don't do religion but like all other religions I don't care what they want to practice as long as they don't make me do it as well. I work with two Muslim blokes and they're absolutely lovely. I don't see why people get so worked up over it.

Is this a non-Muslim only, slag off session or can Muslim DS members join in and presumably justify to you their "so called religion and their role in the UK"? Damned insulting!

It is good to see though that non muslims have now realised that not all muslims are terrorists lol.”

I'm aware we have a muslim mayor. I live in London. I agree that the actions of people like ISIS or al Qaida are frightening ordinary people especially people from areas where there are no muslims anyway and they don't know any muslims. I'm glad you've posted that the likes of ISIS are not practising islam properly. Are you muslim?

Same as I feel about anyone else. Some are dicks, some are lovely, and most are somewhere in between.

Incidentally, when you say "so-called religion", I'm a bit stumped. I mean, you can have any opinion of Islam that you want, and that's just another boring day on DS, but if you're going to start suggesting it's not even a religion at all then that's a more interesting line of enquiry and I'd love to see where you're going with it and from whence it came.

The problem with simple broad labels - christian, jew, muslim, scientologist, atheist etc in the context of religion - is that it masks a huge amount of variation. I'm an atheist but feel more affinity with certain religious people than I do with some other atheists.

Furthermore, whilst I have opinions on what sort of behaviour a progressive society should encourage and how best to safeguard those traditions, if people don't behave that way I believe there are reasons for it other than they're just 'bad' people.

So I can't really answer the question.

I know many muslims and can tell you that they all have varying levels of devotion. There was a two part documentary on the beeb a couple weeks back called Muslims Like Us and this perfectly demonstrates this. There may be the occasional oddball amongst them who twist the true message of Islam in order to serve their own purposes or because of a chip on their shoulder.

Same as I feel about people of all religions, you get some extremists & some that are total nutjobs that allow religion to control their lives from whatever fairytale they choose to read, and finally you have the idiotic ones that use religion as a cover up for being homophobic. But then you do get the odd few nice ones that don't preach their bollox in public and leave it in the religious building of their choosing.

Islam is unlike other religions. It isn't just about belief or faith, or merely a religion.

Islam is a complete way of life with its own laws, justice system, it dictates every aspect of the followers life with rules to abide by everyday.
From when Muslims awake, to how they wash, use the toilet, marriage, sex, entertainment, activities, diet, how to eat, conduct themselves, trading laws, politics, their money & how they lend/borrow/bank, etc etc.

The religion is not separated from daily life.

Scholars, are followers legal counsels who followers turn to in times of trouble or marriage difficulties & they appoint judges to resolve disputes between the community in accordance with Islamic laws.
A Muslim is obedient to & submits him/herself to God. By following these rules of life as dictated in the Quran and living life as their prophet would have done, they believe they will one day go to paradise.

Unlike other religions, it cant just be left at the Church/Mosque after Friday prayers as the laws of Islam cover every single aspect of their daily life.

OK, so it's a cult, not a religion?

What differentiates the two, in your opinion?

You keep TEASING us with an interesting theological/political discussion and then snatching it away on a wave of hateful bollocks.

Do you want this conversation or not?

I am quite happy with those Muslims who live in the UK who have adopted our ways and lifestyle
Those who would try to force something different on us are a no no as far as I am concerned
