It's true, they use less energy in heating the water and also use less water to wash dishes etc.

Think about it, twelve place settings all in one go.

Anyone saying they can happily manage without a washing machine are telling lies ! Of course you can wash clothes by hand, I wash all sweaters and bras that way. But you can't easily wash towels and bedding by hand, not to mention all the pairs of jeans a family get through. Yes you can do it in the bath, but how do you get rid of the water from the articles if you haven't a separate spin dryer ? Hand wringing wet washing isn't as effective, bloody hard work and it would take days to dry and air properly.

I could easily manage without a microwave as it's only used to re - heat or defrost, and I manage already without a dishwasher.

I tend to wash dishes as I go - even when cooking - rather than leaving them hanging around, there are only two of us here. If there is a pile of dishes and food is left to harden and dry, I will fill a sink up and put the dishes in there for the food to soften. When I go to wash them I then wash and rinse them under running water.

My favourite thing is using paper plates at Christmas ”

Well I will enlighten you. A normal size dishwasher will easily take the dishes from a 3 course meal for 4/6 people, plus tumblers or wine glasses and more than enough space for all the cutlery and tea/coffee cups too and still have room for more.

It is great to have a dinner and afterwards put all the dirty dishes in the dishwasher and they are all cleared away from the table and kitchen, detergent tablet in, shut the door, push a switch and 2 hours later or when you guests have left they can be removed.

No way can anyone wash up and dry in anywhere near the time it takes me to fill and empty a dishwasher.

You are assuming everyone has a family. But even then I have done without many times.. There are many ways to wring water out of clothes.. My fav one, is to wrap the item in a towel and get two people to twist it. People managed to do washing before.. Happily? Hmmm probably not jumping with glee but pretty happy when the last item was hung out

I would not want to live without my lecky stuff but I could do it very easy.

All these people who airily say they can hand wash, or go to the laundrette, would find it so inconvenient if the actually had to do it that way. Imagine coming home from work and going through the process of washing , rinsing and wringing out , let alone waiting days for it to dry!
A washing machine has become an essential item
I well remember my burco boiler, spin drier, Hoover with hand wringer , then progressed to electric ringer, then twin tub and finally automatic
No way would I ever go without my washing machine!
Fridge- my mum never had one till I was 18, but again it is an essential, and I couldn't imagine life without one
I could manage without an oven, as I cook many meals on the hob and also have a slow cooker and halogen cooker

i`ve managed for years, i have heating and a dehumidifier and i can dry laundry from hand wrung in not much longer than a tumble drier, which is what i used to dry my hand washed laundry in before i moved.

i used to hand wash for a family of 6 for extended periods when i couldn`t afford to replace broken machines too, without a drier, i had a washing line and a gas fire with a nursery guard.

terry nappies too, with my first two children, it can be done and it`s not really that difficult.

I think time dims our memory and we forget the drudgery of washing by hand
It may not be difficult but it's time consuming , and nowhere near as efficient
No way can towels be washed properly or hygienically by hand, and boiling them was a long winded nightmare
Who would ever want racks of drying washing hanging around

my memory is fine, i do washing by hand almost every day.

i had a boiler for the nappies, which had been through the milton first.

my washing is as clean and hygienic as the next man`s and i`m willing to bet that my hot tap - that i can`t keep my hand under or get in a bath of - is hotter than many people use in their machine cycle.

i would still have racks of drying washing around if i had a washing machine.

As husband is not on list would opt for oven - not used it for ages.

My microwave was the best present ever and I use it for everything I cook and for milky coffee every day. I hoard clothes so my washing machine is essential. I could live without my toaster as my cooker has a grill. I'm getting a toasted sandwich maker soon. My fridge is essential too as I have my heating on. I use my freezer. My TV was a gift and is essential even though I have lots of books. My phone is absolutely essential. I speak to family and go online for various things on it.

Unless the towels are boiled, there's no way they can be hygienically Washed by hand , unless you have extremely strong arms!

Why not? Hot water, rubber gloves, persil.

My mum put my teapot in milton over christmas, and now all the patination and old flavour has gone . It's all sparkly and not at all like a teapot should be

I rarely even enter the kitchen, but with two laundrettes and numerous shops, supermarkets, restaurants and take-aways on our doorstep, I think losing the vacuum cleaner would hit hardest.

i could just borrow my parent's vacuum cleaner every so often. Or pick up the big bits and use a lint roller for the little bits!

Out of the OP's list I'd pick the cooker to go without. I go through phases of using it but can equally not use it for months if I'm working all hours. I suppose I could live without a fridge if it was necessary, just pick up food for each day and use powdered milk.

I've just paid out for a decent hoover as I kept buying cheap ones which broke. I want to be able to keep my flat nice and can't do that without a hoover.

Washing machine, no way. The longest I could go without a washing machine is a week.

I don't have a dishwasher and really wish I had one.

I've no doubt towels can be washed by hand, I did it years ago, but no way can this method compete with washing them in a washing machine, both for cleanliness and hygiene
Anyone who prefers the drudgery of hand washing is welcome to it, but if my washing machine broke down, there would be another in its place before you can say Hotpoint!

How do you get the water out of your washing, enough for it to dry without dripping ? No wonder you need a dehumidifier - wet washing all over the place. You paint a grim picture ! I would go to the laundrette once a week rather than have stuff like sheets and towels hanging all over the place, and just wash smaller / delicates by hand.

Why would anybody do without a washing machine by choice anyway ? All the hours spent doing laundry like a person was forced to do years ago A nearly new second hand one from Gumtree if you couldn't afford a new one, would be better surely !
