At the risk of my opinion being deemed hyperbole I thought it was a fantastic episode and a fitting end.

To those who didn't then fair enough but please respect people's opinions rather than dismissing them as hyperbole.

I know there will be fans who think it is the wrong thing to do, that's understandable if they are favourites, and future producers may well resent that they can't return, but I think it is a good call.”

BIB: Far to much focus on things like that. The average casual viewer will not have seen that and it smacks of knowingness. Focus on quality drama not gimmicks

Except for this entire "leave your sister behind plot" as if anything ever in their history would suggest to Jack that Ronnie would ever do that.

And the absurd shallow water drowning.

Yep. They were moving to Ongar (as we were told over and over) not the moon. It was contrived as much of the "family" stuff is.

I wonder what people who are dismissing this as rubbish think of the Philth's endless feuds/comas/addictions/car crashes/gangster tosh storylines?

Preposterous is not the word and yet he gets a free pass because he is King Weeble.

Fitting end that Roxy was responsible for her sister drowning.
Also interesting that "I only wear black" Ronnie died in virginal white

Why should they write solely for casual viewers?

Agree with you fully sorcha - if people see it as hyperbole then I'm guilty as charged.

Sublime episode, absolutely incredible.

He's been with the show for 25 years. He's a legend. He's not going anywhere.

And? It doesn't make what he's survived any less preposterous if people are going to use that argument about tonight

This is small a pay off for long term fans of the show - who are surely the lifeblood of any long-running series, soap or otherwise?

Taken alone, the scene with Ronnie and Roxy squirting the had no impact on the episode at all meaning no impact on your so-called 'average casual viewer'. It was just another moment in what was, in my opinion, a great segment of dancing and frivolity. For longer term viewers, it was a lovely moment of nostalgia that referenced back to when the characters first arrived. Not even every long-term viewer would remember that, but those who did got a lot of pleasure from it.

You didn't need to have any 'knowingness' (whatever that means) about Ronnie or Roxy to enjoy that scene.

Sorry but I think you're making a silly claim here.

The storylines were repetitive when not sensationist for ratings. As people said weeks ago, Roxy was better without Ronnie around. When she returned it was back to "You're my sistaaaa". That made them dull. But that's my opinion. It was due to SOC returning to character-led scripts I was glued tonight instead of yelling at the screen for them to get on with it and cheering when they did. Their deaths will have an enormous impact on those left behind.

I thought it was a sad, amazing, completely fitting ending. It did feel a little quick; would have liked to see more or an attempt at rescue. But then sometimes death is very sudden - and trying to rescue someone, while wearing a long, flowing wedding dress and after
2 or 3 drinks probably isn't the best combination.

But Ronnie and Roxy arrived together, have always been together and it's always been Ronnie looking out for Roxy. If they'd wanted a bit more drama and a longer, drawn out ending, it could have been Ronnie going in first, Roxy trying to save her and failing, being rescued while just alive but dying later. .
But it was fitting the way it happened.

But the other soaps love a bit of a fire, car crash, death after death in the small farm, or the oldie soap, or the teenie soap.

It was completely out of place in EastEnders. The promo you mention was just that a promo, not part of the show. Now the main show is referencing it's past promos? Too much focus on this sort contrivance than on believable, character led narrative.

In fairness we did get some of that tonight from Mick and Lee. Lee being particularly good tonight.

That is what EastEnders should be doing, not using music tracks and slo-mo. They are contrived, silly, dated and lazy. Can the writers not write scripts that convey all we need to know? Do producers have to rely on these hackneyed devices? It's dire and damaging.

Presume that clarifies for you.
