Was R&R's exit one of the most gruesome in soap ever?

The scene of Ronnie struggling in the dress is absolutely horrific to watch. And that final scene of them floating in the pool was so haunting. When it was announced they'd be drowning in a pool, I had an image of Ronnie's dress dragging her down to save Roxy. But that scene of her being strangled and enveloped was horrific. It's without a doubt a memorable EE exit though.

I'd say it is probably the most gruesome, yeah. Considering the time that was shown too - so eerie.

Those scenes were definitely gruesome imo, Ronnie seemed to just get enveloped by her dress and she couldn't get free and her scream was very eerie and when her locket fell and clinked on the bottom it was quite macabre and the scene of both of them just floating at the end was very disturbing indeed.

Sarah Barnes in Hollyoaks and Yvonne Atkins in Bad Girls remain my most gruesome

It was an awful exit for two longterm characters.

Sarah Barnes was shocking. I was like throughout it. Still one of my favourite soap episodes.

Oh absolutely, it's up there as one of the most gruesome in recent memory.
Love it or hate it, EastEnders promised a memorable exit for the pair and they delivered in spades.

It was extremely harrowing, but you couldn't look away. That's what will make it stand the test of times, as opposed to another run-of-the-mill explosion/car crash.

Whilst both were gruesome, Sarah was in HO Later broadcast just before 10pm and Bad Girls wasn't really a soap - more of a drama (and again aired just before 10pm). I couldn't believe what happened in EE considering the time it broadcast.

As far as direction was concerned it was an excellent episode. The editing was very good. My only issue with it from a storyline perspective is that when you kill of characters in an isolated freak accident there's not really much else you can do with it other than showing other characters being upset for a bit.

Well directed and edited, not nearly as gruesome as Sarah Barnes death.

Very true. If a soap did a drowning story I'd normally expect to see a struggle in the water before they either sink or they show them dead in the next scene. The way it was directed so that we saw Ronnie enveloped in her dress and suffocated was very graphic for 7:50 at night.

I was freaked out as the material of Ronnie's wedding dress trapped her as she was trying to pull free. Then their lifeless bodies floating by one another...very very eerie.

I expect we'll see quite a lot of guilt and blame from the other characters. Jack will feel guilty about letting Ronnie go. Honey will feel guilty about interrupting them. And in future I suppose we could see Amy and Ricky possibly feeling guilty about asking for a story. Not to mention the fact that Amy and Matthew have now been left without a mother, which is sure to affect them during the next few years.

It was also much darker than I was expecting. The whole drowning in a swimming pool thing sounds quite simple. But the way it was directed didn't make it feel ridiculous or OTT at all. It felt very human, and in character with Ronnie ultimately dying trying to help her sister. A pattern there's always been ever since they arrived

It was very true to the relationship of the sisters and in keeping with the vision of Sean O'Connor for the show, which is on the more day to day detail than big extravaganzas.

With Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street all doing one stunt or another in the past couple of months, I think EastEnders are playing a blinder, because they are standing out, whilst Emmerdale and Hollyoaks are constantly upping the ante.

I love a good stunt, but you should never become desensitised to an explosion or fire as a viewer. It should always be the culmination of a big story or set of stories.

It was definitely up there, especially for pre-Watershed.

Yvonne Atkins and Sarah Barnes were the most shocking ever (I get Bad Girls wasn't a soap, but that death can't not be mentioned).
