What?? ITS MADE ME EVEN MORE ANGRY WITH HIM!
It was a well directed episode, however R&R should not have been killed off.
The only saving grace for this show at the moment is Lee's depression storyline. Sod all else.
So yes ''SOC'' is still god awful.

A few months ago, people were comparing that there was nothing to talk about re EE. In that respect, the man has absolutely done his job in getting people talking about the show again.

LOL they'll find something as ever!!! they always do
Now they'll say it's too depressing or something but when they had a happy Christmas just gone it was too happy, warm, no drama etc. They can't win though.

I've said it before and ill say it again, SOC has brought back focus on characters and then story. He isn't throwing out sensatonal stuff everywhere or relying on it to the point he's changing characters personalities or the continuity of the show to suit his ideas.

For his first couple of months he's been building from the ground up and bringing stability that EastEnders used to have before the last 6 years of dross. Now he's finally hit us with something big and it's been the most grim thing that has happened easily in the last 6 years.

If you don't like the way the show is now, from past experience, stop watching until he's gone because it's not changing. But you won't. You'll moan without merit or substance (without merit or substance sounds too much like DTC).

If you liked the past 6 years but dont like this, then I don't get you. This is good character storytelling. This is EastEnders.

I've moaned the last 6 years because I've been so dismayed at the state I found the show I've watched all my life become. I genuinely thought it would never have the same level of quality again. It's attention to detail is back to being brilliant.

Give me that Ronnie and Roxy episode any day over something like Gavin (now the original "hello princess" retcon mess) laughably chasing Sharon around a mansion.

This new years day ep was beautifully shot, acted, written, clever and executed. It was a quality and heatbreaking and shocking send off for the girls. EastEnders stepped up and went there again. Something it hasn't really done since Bradley fell of the Vic. The grit was truly back and awesome and grim. True EastEnders. It was fittingly tragic.

I'm so looking forward to this year. Well done SOC and team.”

Great episode.

Judging from what i have seen on twitter and facebook, people are certainly talking about the show again... for all the wrong reasons!

Better than nothing hey... and tbh who cares what some eejits on Twitter say. I liked R&R too but they have to get over it - it's not changing. Ranting on Twitter ain't going to do anything.

I think it's way too early to call him the saving grace of the show because we haven't seen enough of his material to form a solid opinon. One decent episode in the midst of 4 months of average ones is not enough for me. I believe 2017 will let us know whether his appointment has been a positive one.

None of what I've heard over the past 3 years has urged me to tune in. I don't feel passionate enough to at this point. However I will say that New Years Day was a very good episode. While I'm not a fan of how they exited the show, visually it was shot beautifully.

However at the risk of getting lynched here, I do think SOC has to up his game and deliver us some decent and hard-hitting storylines. I'd personally like to care about the characters again and want to feel excited about the show. I'm not suggesting sensationalistic deaths, shocks and twists. However a decent level of entertainment is neccassary for all soaps to survive in this day and age.

I really get the impression the cast are not happy with him therefore i wonder just how much longer he can carry on. Had he decided to kill off Ronnie and Roxy later this year, i do not think it would have happened.
The language some cast members have used has led me to believe he is not a popular producer amongst them. Also as i said in another thread earlier, i dont want to draw too much attention to it, but the REAL Scott Maslen has favourited my tweet about SOC being an awful producer for the show

Oh dear, that doesn't sound too good. I don't want to judge him - at least not too harshly - until he's been at least a year into the role. However it never bodes to well when a producer is unpopular with the cast. All this is very remincient of Kirkwood and we all know what happened there.

But with the greatest of respects to the cast, he's not there to be their friend, he's there to run a show. If he didn't axe any characters on the basis of their popularity amongst their colleagues then the show would never move forward.

Also, one favourited tweet does not an angry cast make.

In. Your. Opinion.

Ronnie and Roxy had run their course and I personally was glad to see them go. I like how it's going at the moment and do not need drama constantly. This is far more subtle and a return to the good old days. I like where SOS is going and he's weeding out the dross and building on the characters that are left.

Scott Maslen..Lol. Of course he's going to favour that tweet. The writings on the wall for him now with no Ronnie to go round in circles with.
Next out IMO and it can't come quick enough.

Well I don't disagree with you actually, infact I am still bemused as to why he was asked back in the first place!
Perhaps if he wasn't he would not have been there when SOC arrived and this obscene wedding debacle would.never have happened
