People I know watch eastenders on iplayer so that could be the low ratings, eastenders is the best soap going beats Corrie hands down

That is a awful rating for not only a New Year's Day episode but also the exit of two high profile characteare that have been in the show for almost a decade. I get that that there is iplayer. I get that there is repeats, recordings etc. Ratings for soaps overall are down due to these very factors. However for a episode that's been a widely publicised and on New Year's Day - where ratings are generally better, that is shockingly low.

At the risk of getting lynched here, I do think SOC needs to inject some real drama this year, otherwise the viewers figures will continue to slide. A 'community feel' is simply not enough in this day and age. Just my two pence worth.

What the very selective doom merchants are not saying re the ratings.

Is that EE finished five minutes early, and many viewers turned over exactly as the credits rolled to Corrie on ITV.

If you look at the 15 minutes averages, EE was well over six million 7 to 7.15, 7.15- 7.30 and 7.30- 7.45, It fell considerably Post 7.45 brining down its average. Thoose gloating about low ratings will not give out that information.

Also EE has been No 1 and No 2 on IPlayer today above Sherlock, many EE viewers watch on catch up, or series link. Or IPlayer. Many would have been out last night enjoying the long bank holiday and catch up later. Overnight ratings are the top of the iceberg nowadays, the consolidated ratings seven days later are a bit more accurate.

Some posters are rather economical with the truth, just to wind people up.

The tape checked figure for EastEnders is 6.3 or 6.4m, according to some on the ratings thread. While not brilliant, that is slightly better.

The Xmas ep consolidated from 5.9m to 7.8m. I expect last night will see a similar jump.

I wouldn't call EE 'stunning' Gavin Shipman.”

That's not true.

There was loads of praise for EastEnders on here last night. A few OTT reactions to the characters being killed off but mostly praise.

The papers aren't always accurate and how many people saw that article on The Sun online in comparison to how many watch EastEnders?

I think many viewers didn't watch as a form of protest against the deaths.

There might have been some who didn't watch it because they didn't like the two girls. A few months ago Emmerdale had a massive car pile up and in the days leading up to it we saw events from various peoples' points of view - each episode was centred on a particular character or characters. I don't like the characters that were in one episode so I didn't watch that episode.

I doubt it. Christmas Day looked on the low side (as did everything else on Christmas Day) yet timeshifted 2 million to a decent figure.

EE's final BARB figures are still OK and loads catch up on iPlayer. They'll be hoping the overnights start to rise a bit now SOC has his house in order but it won't be axed at this level whatever happens.

Viewing figures don't take into account the amount watching from the iPlayer.

Sherlock only got 8m and it usually gets around 10m-11m.

Not everyone watched TV 'live' anymore!

On what soap planet were they two iconic characters
Dirty Den and Angie are iconic. R&R were two decent characters in their time but way past their best by the end

That rating can not even be excused. Dreadful! Last year got 8.3 million aswell! HUGE drop.”

they really really aren't

That would get 14 million
