Would you work in a betting shop if you have had no experience of doing so, or if you have absolutely zero interest in the subject and you have never even been in one ?

I would work in a betting shop if I needed a job. I have been in a few times usually Grand National Day to place my yearly bet. My partner bets a lot so is always in William Hill.
However I have a phobia due to this...bookie pens. I can't touch them. Horrible little things which have multiple purposes other than writing out your bet, nose picker, arse scratchier, ear poker, tooth pick, heaven knows how many people have chewed/sucked on them before you use one.

If I was in a position where there were no jobs that I was used to & had experience in available then yes I'd try working in a betting shop despite having no knowledge of gambling odds/sports etc. Hopefully I'd pick it up on the job and I'd ask some of my more knowledgeable mates for some advice. I know you can deal with some difficult customers but it all looks good on the CV eventually

Can't be picky with jobs these days.

If you have no job you can't afford to turn your nose up at anything. If they are willing to take you without experience go for it.

I am sure plenty of people who work in clothing shops don't have an actual interest in fashion. A job is just that sometimes

I have a friend who is a successful car salesman but who has zero interest in cars. As far as he is concerned they are just boxes to sell and might as well be fridge freezers or sofas. Some of the people he works with are really into cars but are rubbish at selling.

I would have thought such a job would be ideal, having no interest would make you a great applicant. You don't really want people working there who place bets themselves, it's a really bad idea - and as far as I'm aware employees are usually banned from placing bets at their place of employment (if not entirely?).

I don't think I could ever do that job, to be perfectly honest.

I've never placed a bet in my life and don't plan to. Also, I couldn't bear taking money off all these poor people who were placing bets in the hope they'd win something. The vast majority won't, that's why there's no such thing as a poor bookmaker!

It's the same as any retail job if not worse. IE lack of guaranteed hours, and crap pay. Also bare in mind that betting shops open bank holidays and weird hours so you will have to cover them, probably for no extra pay.

The betting shops around here are always advertising for workers. I was going to go to an interview at one but decided against it after I read up on Glassdoor.

Basically it's a declining industry and the big money guys are just milking the last pennies of profit before it all goes online. Hence the high staff turnover and low moral

I'd imagine a working knowledge of the various types of bets is a minimum wiki.

What a strange question especially from someone who constantly cries poverty on here.

Of course I would if the alternative was unemployment.

Looking at it other way around - why would someone who manages a betting shop give a job to someone with no experience or interest in the subject when presumably there are other candidates who know the difference between a yankee and an accumulator.

Because you don't want people who bet to work in a betting shop

I have a friend who currently works in a betting shop, and another who used to - neither have ever been gamblers, and neither knew anything about betting when they got the jobs.

It's hardly difficult to train someone to do the work, it's simple enough.

If I needed a job I would. Not being interested in your work is common. I've not always been interested in the particular project I happen to be working on. That's life. You just knuckle down and get it done.
Also, I couldn't bear taking money off all these poor people who were placing bets in the hope they'd win something.
Oh that's easy. You just need to develop a sadistic streak

I don't fancy being assaulted by a bloke who has just lost hundreds of pounds on a fixed odds betting terminal, so I'd give it a miss.
