maybe its me ???
I can remember when all night radio 2 was a real treat maybe once or twice a year with names like Ray Moore/ Roger Moffat/ Keith Skews etc took part, there wasn't anything else to listen to so a captive audience.
Mr Pearce a consummate professional indeed been around a while and his knowledge of dance/soul/R&B music. is undoubtedly infinite.
but if I wanted to listen to that style all night I would tune to Kiss/Capital/Radio 1 etc etc.
Can someone explain why Radio 2 dedicates 5 hours to this type of music, can I be the inly one who feels like this.
PS great to hear Tony again was it planned to start the show with "I will survive" I do hope so it was a brilliant choice keep going TB

Looking at the tracklisting I can't see a single song there that would be played on modern day Radio 1 or Kiss or Capital.
All the tracks range from around 10-30 years old at a guess, targetting Radio 2's age range (i.e. me) just nicely.
Let's face it, us ravers are getting old.

Agree. Kiss is aimed at chart living kids these days and has very little to do with it's original premise.

I'm in my mid 40s and my age group were the ones clubbing in the 90's. Soul/dance/house is still a big market for us oldies. Caister is still going strong twice a year and there are events most weekends for us oldies who still love to dance.
I spent NYE at an event with 400 people aged 40+ dancing to house anthems and I'd say that's Dave Pearces target audience

With Radio 2 now having to cater to musical tastes from the 1930s right through to the turn of the century it's inevitable culture clashes like this will occur.

The simple answer is a "radio 2 extra" playing mostly pre 1975 music but the only problem is the BBC are basically skint.

Radio 2 needs to make more of an effort to pull in younger listeners. Radio 1's target audience stops at 29, so R2 needs to pull in 30-something listeners. Those who were seeing Dave Pearce play in clubs in the 90s will most likely be in their mid to late 30s by now. It's a completely appropriate choice.

Whilst I agree with the above, we also have to remember how much life expectancy has risen. Living into your 80s is now the norm, with 90 plus far from unusual.

That gives radio 2 an almost impossibly wide brief to fill, from Bing Crosby and Glenn Miller to Eminem and rave.

There have already been a couple of part time stations -Jazz and BBC 50s that hint at a 2 extra type station as possibly being something the BBC would be interested in.

They did play Eminem in a prime 9:30am slot last week.

It was 'Lose Yourself' - played as part of the countdown of the World's 100 best selling artists. They also played Jay Z's Empire State of Mind.

Well someone who brought Lose Yourself as a 16 year old will be 30 now and getting towards the top of the Radio One demographic.

It'll probably be the early twenties before Radio Two really starts to feature Eminem, Dr Dre etc as mainstream daytime artists on a regular basis but that is clearly the way the station is heading.

I would expect Tim Westwood to join the station before long as well.

That would be hilarious! Gun shots and sirens wailing, followed by Westwood introducing 'I'd like to teach the world to sing", with a couple of 'yo holler' in the middle...

When was the last time Radio Two played "I'd like to teach the world to sing?"

Anyway clearly I'm not expecting Tim to replace Ken Bruce or Steve Wright but I can see him on a Saturday night slot.

A Radio 2 Dance station would be good but would the BBC do that kind of pop up for like five days?

Spot on. I remember doing my homework whilst listening to his early evening weekday/Sunday show on Radio 1 back in the lats 90's/early 2000's

I have the full 5+ hour show on my iPlayer app to listen to at some point, only heard 15 minutes of it coming back from work the other night. Dont see the issue at all, the OP is way off on this one. What is he expecting to hear at that time NYE?

With the Iplayer radio app there is not much point other than putting some on demand shows on there to cater for different people.

In another 5/10 years you will have the current 20-25 year olds moving into R2 territory and they are used to on demand and not listening 'live'.

Westwood was on Pointless last week reading a question, so starting to target the R2 type audience who'd also watch that show.

Dave spent a huge (by R1 stds) 7 years on R1 drive from 97-04 before Scott then Greg took on the slot. So Dave was one of the biggest late 90s/early00s R1 DJs, so fully deserves a regular R2 show like his R1 contempories from that time (Cox, Mayo, Whiley & Radcliffe). The only other big R1 name from that era to not feature on R2 is Moyles.

Dave was also main cover for Chris Evans on R1 breakfast so why not give him a shot at covering R2 breakfast for a change from Coxy.

Good point, I'm 36 and occasionally download Pete tong Friday night on my iPhone to listen to at the gym while I attempt to exercise. As I don't really go out I associate much less with the music so there is a void there to be filled (I tend to listen to Ibiza global radio / sonica occasionally at my computer)

I never thought to check out radio 2 for classic tunes - I used to find Dave pierces show on Sunday night R1 anoying - just find his cheesey trance choons style tedious. A bit too smashy n nicey for my likening though I did win two Gc summer sound system tickets from him!

If u watch Dave pierce dj he used to have this weird look of closing his eyes with a weird smile, like he was weeing on himself! Very strange, not the cool pomp of Pete tong or deep house djs fist pumping and looking trendy

Its Broadcaster, and you're an idiot!

Criticism from someone who loves "Heart" and its repetitive garbage, about the BBC, and its diverse output , well, it makes you look a fool.

as the O/P on this I have 2 further questions.
1..........what is the average age of the other contributors to my question
2..........where does the sister station 6 Music fit in age wise, surely that is the next move for Radio 1 listeners before they hit Radio 2?

6Music is mainly guitar based, Dave Pearce did a dance show on there but it was soon dropped as didn't fit their style, there is no bbc station which covers all genres that sits between 1 and 2.

There still is a Dance show on 6 Music. Nemone's Electric Ladyland on Early Saturday mornings.
