I wish to acquire a washer/dryer (I don't have room for separate machines). I don't particularly require a large capacity machine though I suppose it would have some advantages. I like the look of LG to be honest but what would others recommend?

As always, you can't really go wrong with Bosch - but they are exceedingly heavy

Hi,

I can look at the Which? washer/dryer reviews for you if you like but I'll need some help to narrow down the options, as there are 68 freestanding machines reviewed, and 10 are Best Buys, 5 are Don't Buys. So tell me - what is min/max price, min/max wash capacity, min/max dry capacity, width, depth, energy label A or B (if you're bothered about this).

Are there any types of fabrics you are especially concerned about? Do you want a child lock, or delayed start, or time remaining, or a quick wash programme? Are you bothered about how long it takes to complete a wash program or how noisy it is?

To give you an idea, Which? have tested 5 LG machines between £600 - 900 and only the cheapest is a Best Buy, the LG FH4A8TDH4N with a score of 65%. It is standard size and can take up to 8kg washing and 5kg drying. It's 85cm high, 59cm width, and 64cm depth.

It takes 222 mins to complete a 40C cotton wash program and 172 mins to complete a synthetics program. It has delayed start, time remaining and a child lock.

From the review - "It does a great job of washing synthetic fibres, such as sports kit, and it’s as good as any washer-dryer we’ve tested at both spinning and rinsing. It’s also brilliant when dealing with cottons.

"When drying, we like the way it dries clothes evenly – this is a good indication that the drying sensors in the drum are doing an effective job of judging when the clothes are dry. This means you’re unlikely to end up with some damp and some bone-dry clothes. ... We’ve seen washer-dryers that dry clothes more quickly than this LG and in some of our tests, we found that it dried for slightly too long."

Thank you for the replies.

I'm a bit put off Bosch due to the weight. I foresee that being a problem.

evil c I've looked at some reviews and they seem to be a bit mixed. One consistent theme was that the clothes weren't very well dried but I wonder if there was confusion betwixt washing and drying weight.

As the saying goes there are more questions than answers.

I just want something to wash and dry effectively. I don't need all sorts of bells and whistles. As said I don't particularly require a large capacity though I can see there being some advantages to that.

As for price I don't want to spend more than necessary but I have to temper that with "You get what you pay for".

Really you need a separate washer and dryer, if you can't do that then you're pretty well stuck with a washer/dryer, but they certainly aren't as good as separate units.

I'm looking at the Which? reviews now, but because you're so vague about your requirements it's difficult to recommend anything. What's this problem about the weight? Why would that make a difference?

It's not worth me going into detail about the relative merits of each machine as I may be wasting my time, and not even a price to help me either. What I've done is split the machines into 3 price ranges and picked the best from each range (and you can add the LG to the £500-600 group).

£500-600, the Bosch WVG30461GB is a Best Buy for £525: http://www.johnlewis.com/bosch-wvg30...c_pr_200_40000, the AEG L75670NWD another Best Buy £599: http://www.johnlewis.com/aeg-l75670n...c_pr_200_40000, the John Lewis JLWD1613 another excellent buy £600: http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-...c_pr_200_40000.

£400-500 - the Zanussi ZWD71460NW is well worth a look £470: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01G6SRA...d4d6f0fffaefd9, or the Beko WDA914401W for £495: https://www.debenhamsplus.com/p/1042...m=tradedoubler.

£300-400 - a good all rounder is the Hotpoint BHWD 129 for £379: http://www.hughes.co.uk/built-in-app...d129-1/product, or the slightly cheaper Beko WDX8543130W for £350: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/househo...mp~Pricerunner.

I'm vague about my requirements because I'm no expert on these machines and am trying to find what might be most suitable. I suppose something around the £500 mark though if there's a cheaper model that's just as good then I'd go for that. As I said I just want something that washes and dries effectively and is relable.

If you can afford it, go for a Miele.

I use a Zanussi ZWD 71460 W, it replaced a 13 year old Zanussi washer/drier, when it needed a new door seal I got a new one instead. I had my moneys worth out of it.

Whilst I did read reviews, including Which - Experience, a reasonable price, and expectations were the over-riding reasons for buying the same again.

A feature I insist on is a fluff filter on the draining route, 1400 rpm spin speed is more than enough. I reckon a Washer/Drier is good for a 1-2 person household.

It does the washing and drying job efficiently as indeed did the previous one.
