If The Rock Charts Are Anything To Go By:
Well these days I do not listen to Radio 1 much apart from The Official Chart sometimes on a Friday and I am 43, but from looking at the Rock Chart recently on Radio 1's website I see there is an awful lot of music from years gone by.
If that is anything to go by then should Radio 1 not be playing this music on the station?, after all it is what its listeners are buying etc. Maybe Radio 1 could have a big relaunch in September for its Birthday in order to play more tracks from the various charts on the station during the day etc. |

Well the current album charts feature Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones and Rick Astley but I can't see them featuring on Radio 1. Sorry I just can't see why being in the rock chart automatically makes a track suitable for Radio 1?

Looking at that chart maybe Radio 2 needs a Rock Show (Saturday's have Funk and Soul).

But Radio 1 is meant to be a National Pop Music Station, this should mean that yes they push new music but they should also feature music from all the charts etc. How can a station call themselves a National Pop Music Station only to then ignore music that all listeners/fans are buying?.
Is this why most of today's music is rubbish, alright so there is some good music in the current charts but I can not see it being featured on Pick of the Pops at any point. |

As for ignoring what listeners are buying? You have no evidence that it is Radio 1 listeners that are buying and listening to these tracks. As far as I know the rock chart is compiled by sales and streams not via a Radio 1 listener poll? |

Radio 2 needs an album chart show, preferably the current chart and a classic chart side by side.

You live in hope that rock will one day become in vogue again, but it's difficult to see it.
Comes down to money...how many thousands did bands like Queen and Fleetwood Mac spend on studio time? Or they can let a dance producer develop an album on their laptop in their home for a few quid. Also I think younger ears are used to the synthetic sound now. I just accept that rock was a genre like jazz and rock and roll were beforehand. It won't ever completely disappear but can't see the record companies investing in it anytime soon. |

Can't we therefore agree that :
Radio 2 and 6 Music should between them take responsibility for presenting Rock Music; Radio 1 is for young people aged 13 to 25. It is their station ( supposedly ); playing music and presenting features aimed specifically at them. It ideally should be presented by other young people of - say - 20 to 25. This is because young people are a distinct group - always have been and always will be. It has to do with our development, outlook and interests. In fact ( as I've said on this forum several times ), young people's brains fully mature when they are 25, and their whole world changes. Therefore they need their own channel from the BBC if the BBC is going to represent them. Young people mostly stream music so are in no way, shape or form represented in the conventional charts. If the BBC is presenting a playlist for Radio 1 from the charts, then it is NOT representing young people. If the BBC are incapable of presenting rock music and rock charts on Radio 2 or 6 Music, then I thoroughly recommend fellow forum members to start listening to Europe's number one album station, Radio Caroline. It plays loads of rock and classic hit music. It streams online in a far higher quality than the BBC manages, if you listen to the AAC streams from Radio Caroline. The BBC has continually failed to understand WHY Radio 1 should be FOR young people and presented BY young people. I know very good presenters in their early twenties who are presenting professional radio, who are doing the job on local radio. WHY can't the BBC do the same on Radio 1 ? Like many others interested in radio, I'm disappointed that this situation with Radio 1 has been going on now since the end of the 1970s. Young people need to be represented on the national airwaves. Yes - they may not listen now, but provide the correct Radio 1 for them, and the audience will grow. Of course the original Radio Caroline in the 1960s was so popular, because it did what Radio 1 is supposed to be doing now. It was presented BY young people, FOR young people. Well, I've had my say about it ( again ) - over to you. |

I definitely think that there should be a classic rock show somewhere on the BBC, be it on Radio 2 or 6 music. It's one of the few specialist music genres barely catered for at all on the BBC. Country or Jazz fans don't get a great deal either, but at least they get some BBC output. Classic rock lovers get virtually nothing.
I don't think Radio 1 is the correct place for such a show though. |

Maybe the BBC needs to turn daytime Radio 1 over to young presenters who have the wit and knowledge to entertain their peers but can talk to them like real people with none of that put-on bonhomie that the BBC loves. |

Since having DAB in the car 6 Music has been my default station and is generally a good listen but I do find it weird why some areas of rock music are poorly covered by the station yet they feature quite alot of Dance and Rap despite being covered by other networks? |

Radio 1 did a Rock All Dayer in June. All the daytime shows played nothing but rock music, it was a mix of classic songs and newer stuff. I wish they did things like that more often

Sometimes I wonder if a mistake that Radio 1 makes is in assuming that young people are only interested in listening to new music. Many youngsters actually enjoy listening to older music. Any track you've never heard before is still "new", irrespective of when it was actually released.
Having said that, the BBC is a public service broadcaster and by championing only new music, R1 plays an important public service role by helping new artists to establish themselves. If no one ever championed new music then no new music would ever emerge and Britain would be poorer culturally as a result. |

8pm to midnight on Saturday are now catering for dance and funk/soul fans which, to me are far too similar. A Friday night rock show 10-12 would be better suited than Sounds of the 80's which for me was Better on a Saturday night slot. |
