I know there is a separate thread for mobile phones, but this is a software query (and not actually a problem).

On my twice weekly four-hour commute to the Smoke from the sticks, I listen to music on my iPhone. I choose a song at random, then play it on shuffle and get a great cross section of the music I like, from jazz, to rock, to classical etc.

My query is this: I thought that because software had to be written, there is, in fact, no way that a items can be chosen from a list at random. Did I get that right or wrong. And if I am right, how does the software come up with a 'random' list?

It's pseudo-random - strictly speaking truly random very difficult to achieve without external input such as atmospheric noise, thermal noise or radioactive decay etc. Anyway pseudo-random good enough for most purposes - there are several geeky algorithms/maths techniques for achieving it. Loads of stuff online about it.
