Hello,
I have a sony KD49XD8088, and a Onkyo NR414 amp.
I have connected using a HDMI cable, and ARC does work (as well as sending controlling signals to the amp/tv). The amp gets the type of sound (eg. Dolby)
But very occasionally, will blip out (like the type of sound has changed) but resume after 1/2 sec. Happens about every 2 mins or so.. but not always
The amp plays perfectly normally as does the TV

what is causing this then? my HDMI cable must be 1.4 to supply ARC?

You don't need a high speed HDMI cable for ARC. However if the cable is very thin and poorly shielded it may be vulnerable to interference. I had that problem. Swapped the cable with a slightly thicker one and it's been fine ever since.

If you watch Freeview HD audio dropouts will occasionally occur as the TV switches between PCM for stereo transmissions DD 5.1 for anything encoded in surround sound. Some idents and trails on the BBC are in 5.1.
