Fibre available but not accepting orders/new build
Hi
I'm moving to a new build in the next month and started my search for broadband providers as Virgin (my current supplier) is not available there. Using generic broadband comparison sites using the postcode as I have no phone number available yet it suggested I could get fibre from BT, sky etc however when going to sign up for said services it said fibre wasn't available. I dug a bit deeper and used the open reach site to check fibre availability and it came back with the the following response 'Your cabinet is enabled for Superfast fibre however you're not able to order fibre just yet. This might be because the length of the line is too long to get Superfast speeds. We're actively looking at other options. Cabinet icon Exchange name: Stourbridge Exchange status: Fibre enabled Cabinet number: 50 ' Is this because it is a new build house with no line installed yet or does this mean I have no hope of getting fibre? I was disappointed moving from 200mb to 70mb but now look like nearer 5mb ![]() Any help or guidance appreciated |

Sounds like it'd be too long. Even if you don't actually have a phone line, in a new build you should at least have the wiring in place (and BT knows how far away you are).
In an ideal world, all housing developments of any significance would have fibre to the home. BT has recently announced that any development of larger than I think 30 houses will be considered, but it needs the housing developer to tell them I wouldn't hold my breath for a quick fix. If BT are going to do something, it'll need to be a significant investment (they'll have to run fibre closer to, or actually all the way to your home) |

Although the pair to your new build physically exists, it will not be connected to the exchange. This will only be completed when your order your new phone line.
Only then can the length of the line be determined. There may be other factors, such as number of connections already in the fibre cabinet, but you may not get a definitive answer until you move in. Why not move in with 4G tethering and no landline? until you get the info you need. In the meantime you could speak to your new neighbours, for most people in new builds have the same fibre problems. |

If the system knows the cabinet number he/she will be on, it'll know the length too. What they won't know is exactly how well the line will perform. |

Thanks for the replies.
Looks like it's a case of wait and see, I'll have a word with the neighbours when I'm next there and see what they say. My main concern was getting locked into a new none fibre contract and then fibre becoming available Who installs the line, whoever I choose to go with for broadband and land line? |

The actual physical line is always installed by Openreach, though if it's a new build there's a good chance it's already actually installed. You probably have a phone socket with an Openreach logo on it somewhere.
I wouldn't worry too much about being locked into a contract. Unless you want to change companies, you'll have no problems upgrading to fibre when it does become available. e.g. BT broadband to BT infinity will be fine, Sky broadband to Sky fibre will be fine too. |

I can't understand why BT, Virgin or independent broadband suppliers don't get in to bed with developers and lay the cable as developments are built. Virgin's available on the main road the development is off of so would be a relatively easy expansion for them |

That is the right cabinet but it does not have my postcode listed (too new?) on there but the other addresses are on the same estate but completed houses. I am towards the back of the development so maybe the distance from the exchange is the issue?
It could be that the fibre cabinet installed alongside the phone line cabinet is not fully active yet or doesn't yet have enough capacity for every potential subscriber. |

Shouldn't be for fibre broadband as that is inserted at the cabinet your property is wired back to. So distance to the exchange is largely irrelevant in that instance, distance to the cabinet is more important. The exchange distance is more relevant for ADSL broadband.

Sorry, my mistake I meant cabinet
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/guide/...broadband.html shows theoretical fibre speeds at up to 1500m distant from the fibre cabinet. Mind you I suppose the service providers might have their own take on what is the maximum distance they will consider when it comes to providing the service. |

https://www.homeandwork.openreach.co...get-fibre.aspx The date should be taken with a pinch of salt. It could be earlier, it could be later. You need to check on a regular basis, even daily nearer the time. There was a thread running a while ago where the original poster was waiting for his cabinet to go live - by the time he noticed it had the capacity was full and he was back to waiting. Brian |

Until you have a phone line installed you won't have an accurate picture of potential speed availability. Next time you're in the area you could try and find cabinet 50 (it appears to be somewhere around Richardson Drive and Zouche Close). It found, is there a second cabinet within 100 metres (this would be the FTTC "pair") and is this cabinet making a noise (if the fan's working then the electricity is connected !!!).
If found then calculate the distance from the cabinet to your house following the road. This might give you an idea of potential speeds - the further out your are the less speed. Going forward you should choose your ISP based on who you would want for the FTTC service when it arrives. This would ensure a seemless change. Brian |

Whats interesting is the roads adjoining mine are able to have fibre. |

Try your post code in the following - https://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker
I've run a couple of codes related to P50 and they come back as FTTC available. It could well be the the CodeLook database is out of date. Also, it may well be you're too far from the cabinet as per the original message. Brian |

Virgin's available on the main road the development is off of so would be a relatively easy expansion for them As a result it meant that to get more than 2MB ADSL he had to move to one of the properties at the other end of the road. From there he can get Virgin, as well as FTTC and even Hyperoptic. |

Brian Haven't got a date yet for the move as solicitors only returned from their xmas sabitcal today so once I've got that I can cancel Virgin and apply for a new provider and go from there Thanks for all the input so far |

Samknows comes back as fibre available I guess I'm going to have to be patient (not my best skill) and wait and see.

I moved into a new build 6 months ago and had a similar problem. I knew it was connected to a cabinet 300m away but just kept getting told 'not available'.
I got round it by ordering a PSTN line with ADSL initially, and then the day after the PSTN order was closed off the system showed FTTC as available so I was then able to place an order for FTTC. |

I got a generic response from openreach saying they had escalated it to the 2nd level support team who aim to respond within 24 days.
