Hello April ! Presumably with a name like that, you were born in June ? HA HA !

Happy New Year everyone !

A cottage is somewhere quite often with cold floors ! My feet are freezing, so a fan heater is an essential household item ( wasn't there a thread about that on here ? ). Two pairs of socks became mandatory wear as from the end of September !

My goodness - the year IS speeding away - even the TEACHERS start work tomorrow !

BYE !

I would not class any house in a town as a cottage.
And a terraced house (of whatever size) is defintiely not a cottage.

A cottage is a small detatched house, in the country, with a garden.
I would say no more than 2 bedrooms, three at a push.
Age comes into it as well. I'd say no younger than the Edwardian period. It needs period features too eg original fire surrounds or exposed ceiling beams etc.
Sunderland Cottages are terraced, generally single storey, generally don't have gardens, nor do they have exposed beams, most won't have original fire surrounds

When I bought my current home it was described as a 50s cottage

I have sent all sorts of homes described as cottages, from really old houses in the country to new terrace houses in towns.

So define what a cottage is?

Not enough room to swing a cat with ye olde worlde UPVC windows?
I'll stick to the OED. A small house, typically one in the country.

Is princesspoopypants back already?
Come on, hed only wont the defnitiion off a palase, like wot mumy and daddy has .

It shouldn't be allowed to be called a cottage unless Miss Marple would live there.

Not my definition of a cottage. I'd say that would be a small terrace.

Everyone's ideas of what a cottage is will be different, same goes for 'mansion' etc.
