My brother recently bought a Mitsubishi Shogun, a 2012 mofel. A few years ago they were really popular car, far more popular then Range Rover, then there was the really fast Mitsubishi ( was it called a Scuby?) Now seeing a Mitsubishi is really rare..

Why are people not buying Mitsubishi no more?

No idea why you think this. In 2015 (we await 2016 final figures) Mitsubishi UK sales stood at 22,693, UP 43.6% year on year.

Scuby was the nickname for the Subaru Impreza, the Mitsubishi you are probably thinking of is the Lancer, the Evolution variants.

They are.

Mitsubishi sales increased by over 43% between 2014 and 2015 and the figures remain strong with the Outlander PHEV being a big success. 60% of all plug-in hybrids sold are Outlanders.

I'd suggest that you might not notice Mitsubishis because they're all a bit anonymous, whereas the Evo (the Scooby was the Subaru) and even the Shogun were fairly distinctive.

Not much of a car person but I always used to like it whenever I saw a Mitsubishi GTO in the 90s. They were sexy looking cars imo.

Really 43% up? Where I work the place is full of 4x4s, mostly the Range Rover Evoke, BMWs or Mercedes, a few Audi's, Fords, Honda's and so on. Many of my friends also have 4x4s now, non have Mitsubishi.

I don't get why people buy 4x4s.

Not so involved in consumer goods anymore. More into building ships, heavy machinery and engines for factories and nuclear reactors. Also a big player in financing and trading in the energy and metals sectors.

More profit in these sectors than flogging low margin telly's and toasters.

I didn't buy mine but the main attraction of the Outlander Phev for me was the 7% BIK.

It costs me roughly 50 quid a month in tax, my last car (VW Golf) cost almost twice as much and didn't have half the toys, room or fuel consumption this one has.

We've got 2 in the car park at work, and a Disco, a X5, a Q5 and whatever the Volvo SUV is.

Well I need mine for work, I have one of these

Generally though, better driving position, increased safety, space and with some vehicles, prestige are why people buy them.

If you are talking about people who live and work in towns and cities I would agree with you, but as I live in rural Gloucestershire I can think of plenty of reasons for having one.

Winter being a prime example, most of the roads around where I live will never see a gritting lorry.

What would all the yummy mummies think if one showed up at the school gates in a Vauxhall Astra or god forbid, a Kia Cee'd?

BIB: Price. Running costs. Refinement. Owning experience. Residuals.

When Shoguns first launched the 4x4 market was pretty much Land Rover 90/110/Defender if you were a farmer who got mucky, or a Range Rover if you like to stay clean. The Shogun sat nicely between the two: More luxury and just as capable off road as a 110/Defender but much cheaper than a Ranger Rover.

The market has changed a lot since then, and particularly from the 2000's onwards. There's a lot more choice, particularly for those who want the "4x4 look" but have no intention of going off road or pulling something heavy.

Oh, and not wishing to come across as the grammar Nazi but the word when comparing two or more things is than. We use then in reference to time, "... then I kissed her.... then she slapped me.... then we shouted Happy New Year"

People buy 4x4's because they feel safer in them and they like to show off.

If someone buys a 4x4 it's because they happen to like that particular car.

What's not to get? The fact that different people like different things?

But then, as I forgot to put in my reply earlier, most "SUV"s on the road aren't 4x4 anyway, they are two-wheel drive.

Quite simply if you drive an ordinary car now, you are blinded by the bright LEDs of buses, lorries, vans and SUVs.

The best way to mitigate the brightness is to get a vehicle with a higher seated position.

Don't get a Scooby (Subaru Impreza) mixed up with an EVO on a Subaru owners forum it would cause it to combust! 😀

The EVO is no longer made the EVO X being the last one. Subaru Impreza's are still available although now called just the WRX-STI. Not a very common sight though, but in my opinion there is no better car and I've had 2.

Round here you see a lot of Mitsubishi 4 x 4's and a lot of new smaller models as well. Could be to do with where you live.... might be more of the 4 wheel drive ones round here as it's kind of rural.

Interesting how people of rural Gloucestershire need 4x4s while people living in places like Iceland and Finland manage with Fiestas. I worked a a ski rep for a few years living in the mountains of Italy or Austria and we just used 2 wheel drive cars.

My relatives are dairy farmers and have just bought their first ever 4x4, a Audi A3.

I hate the way the big 4x4s role on corners.

When I had my crappy Suzuki my local Suzuki dealership shared a premises with a Mitsubishi dealership (all under the same name)

As my Suzuki spent half its life in that place they often gave me a Mitsubishi as a loan car.

They're very nice cars. The Colt especially. I didn't want to give it back and never made enquiries as to when my own car would be ready. Longer the better! Even the little Mirage was nice to drive. Head and shoulders above my (now binned off) Suzuki anyway.

I always hoped they would loan me a Lancer (they did have one as loan car) but it never happened.

A lot of people these days sadly have a "my car is bigger than yours, get the f**k out of the way" mentality.
