Not likely to happen as the Orknery councillors are only asking for a review and the total poplulation there is only about 20 000.

Good for them. I hope they achieve freedom from Scottish tyranny.

The journalists appear to have have got rather carried away as the headlines don't match the detail of the articles, which is of course not unusual.

13 Orkney councillors want to explore greater powers of devolution from the UK and Scotland. Where did this independence claim come from?

We were in Orkney the year of the Scottish referendum. A few things caught our fancy
When they talk about the mainland, they mean the biggest island. They refer to Scotland as "Scotland" as though it is a foreign place. Several people told us that in practical terms Edinburgh is as remote as London. The place is full of English people who have re=settled there. They voted two to one against independence. So did Shetland. Most people we asked just didn't care about devolution. They already felt remote from Scotland. It is a totally fabulous place. But thats a different thread. |

I would vote for independence from central Scotland where we all apparently speak like Jimmy Crankie , look like him and are a big homogeneous pot of pure Glasga. |

I would love to go to Orkney to see the archaeology sites. It used to be part of Norway.

Isle of Man and the Channel Islands have a different tax regime (it's not called INLAND Revenue on the mainland for nothing!) - does the same apply to the Orkneys (Shetland, Western isles etc), and if not, why not?

Many of us here on the Hebrides feel the same way. For the SNP Scotland stops at Stirling! Andything above the central belt (Aberdeen being the exception ) is as foreign to Ms Sturgeon and her ilk as London.
I would vote for independence from central Scotland where we all apparently speak like Jimmy Crankie , look like him and are a big homogeneous pot of pure Glasga. As for Orkney leaving Scotland, I agree that the article reads too much into the desire for Orkney to be more autonomous and devolved, like all of our islands they face a set of different challenges from us in the rest of Scotland and so should be allowed more leeway to find solutions. I don't think they will be leaving us anytime soon but using the threat might provide some leverage to get more powers. |

Will this become the worlds first Liberal Democrat run oil protectorate.
Hail Emir Tim Farron! But I thought the Lib Dems were pro remain and didn't want to leave things. Will they keep holding referendums until they get their way? |

If the UK was a proper federation, it would make sense for Scotland to split into two states in the highlands and the lowlands.

The highlands population would be very small in comparison to the lowlands though, wouldn't it? Perhaps not viable as a region on its own.

Very disrespectful of them tbh.
