VINTAGE - Red Sands fort ( 1960s offshore radio ) as it was in 1945
The part of the Red Sands forts in hosting 1960s offshore radio is well documented - in fact a book for sale in the Caroline Bookshop describes how the Bates family still live on Sealand :
http://rcsocietysales.co.uk/read.html and look down the page for "Holding the Fort". A photograph of the forts in 1945, when still occupied by the Army and equipped with armaments, has just been published, and can be seen here : https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryPorn...in_the_thames/ One story from the wartime days was that brave German fighter pilots would "play games" with the UK servicemen, by flying under the forts, between the supporting legs... Anyway, I thought that those with an interest in the forts might like to see the picture of them as they initially were... Anyone not familiar with their use in offshore radio, may like to Google for "Red Sands Pirate Radio" for a list of stations and images. |
