Is It Time To Pardon the Iceberg?
This morning there are lots of reports that some "experts" think that it was a fire that sank the Titanic not the iceberg.
Conspiracy theorists will love this. Or this just the press getting more and more desperate for news? Titanic sank due to enormous fire.... What load of tosh. Surely no one on DS will believe this? |

Doesn't seem that outlandish to me. There may well have been a boiler store fire during testing that was a contributory cause if such an incident had affected the steel construction of the hull at the point of impact.

It's time to take a more nuanced, realistic and scientific approach to causality....be it accidents, human behaviour or whatever.

Sorry, no, the melting point of steel is 1500C, there is no way a coal fire at 1000C could ever cause a structural failure, many steel-hulled boats have survived far worse fires without sinking.
+/- corrections but mainly etce2a: and shoots* coughthecat for having the same idea ![]() * nothing personal, I just ran out of custard pies |

Its was stated as fact on the recent program on Channel 4 I believe that the Titanic set sale for America with one of its coal stores on fire which raged for quite some time, thats no conspiracy, that actually happened.
The raging fire resulted in weakening of the water tight compartments hence why the 5th compartment also flooded |

At least they had the sense to evacuate the women and children first - so they could have a bit of peace and quiet to discuss possible solutions.

So how did the U-Boat manage to get in on the act and fire a torpedo?

The iceberg has never been at fault. Steaming at 23 knots in an ice field is what did it.

It is very interesting that the Titanic is by far the largest disaster caused by an iceberg sinking a ship. The next up is only about 100 deaths. |

Load of crap!
And what difference does it make anyway? Doesn't change the fact that the damn thing sank. |

The ship should never have been aloud to leave port in the first place with this fire! But at the time White star Line had already had numerous set backs amongst its Olympic classes, they felt another set back was out of the question, and selfishly put all those lives at risk and sent the Titanic out, crazy |

As the metallurgists said on the programme the fire coupled with the inferior grade of steel used in the construction certainly weakened the structure of the ship.
The fact that the ship sailed with a fire on board is shameful enough but the White Star Company was in financial difficulties so as usual money trumped lives. |

People just repeating the lie! The hole in the side is too small to have been from an iceberg.

Ah. Some sense at last
![]() And all because the U-boat captain very thoughtfully tried to put out the fire. Sometimes even the most well-intentioned acts can have disastrous consequences. |

I will forgive the iceberg but not Kate Winslet for not letting Leonardo on her door.

Sooner or* later, every time traveller gets to visit the Titanic (some more than once!) That probably adds up in its own right to enough weight to sink a ship.
*Should that be sooner and later? |

So was the Titantic ramming the iceberg done deliberately in an attempt to extinguish the raging fire burning in the hull?
Or was the ship striking the iceberg actually a false flag operation to divert attention away from the real cause of the ship sinking? So many questions, we need answers goddamit!! |
