About time the Queens awards were stopped or changed
Cannot understand what some of the people who were awarded honours in the Queens birhday honours list did to deserve the award. Why was Andy Murray and Jessica Ennis Hill and Victoria Beckham another undeserving recipient as far as I am concerned plus all the hangers on.What about the people who do deserve a honour.Sports stars should wait untill they are a bit older.Another thing why are sports stars described as hero's that really bugs me.

Hero I think their outstanding achievements does make them heroes in my eyes. Certainly more so than say a paid killer in the armed forces who is labelled a hero just for signing up.
A person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. |

Look what's the problem?
"Normal people" are given awards but the fact is, like all things in life, not all the best "normal people" get the publicity and award some may deem they deserve. We are not going to fire out knighthoods to 'Derrick from Scunthorpe' and 'Sheila from Bognor Regis' just because they raised some money for the local village raffle. People decry 'sports stars'. Andy Murray was just a normal person at one point, who then dedicated his life to tennis and EARNED his fame and achievements. Why shouldn't he be honoured? He has given entertainment to millions, raised the profile of tennis and done something barely any other Brit has done before. |

If Andy Murray deserves an award for dedicating his life to tennis then surely his mother equally deserves a similar award She is always there, as if they are joined at the hip |

Lynne Fauld's Wood agrees, for diff reasons. She just refused hers Quote:
"I think honours are really important and should be given to people who have done really good stuff. she also reckoned she may have been nominated as a sop or tokenistic gesture "after she chaired a government independent review into the UK's system for the recall of dangerous products which she fears has now been "kicked into the long grass"."And I've changed laws and I've helped saved a lot of people's lives, so maybe I'm deserving of an honour, but I just wouldn't accept it while we still have party donors donating huge amounts of money and getting an honour. ie. never mind, have a medal instead? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-38470922 and here's another: Quote:
Hillsborough campaigner Prof Phil Scraton also turned down an honour in the Queen's New Year Honours list. He refused to accept an OBE in protest "at those who remained unresponsive" to help families and survivors affected by the disaster.
He said he was also unwilling to accept "an honour tied in name to the 'British Empire'." |

The actors, sports stars and pop stars get the award for what, doing their job?
If they are good enough pop stars have their own industry honours, equally if they are good enough athletes will win titles and gold medals, why do they need OBEs, and so on. The same is true of business men, people like Alen Sugar and Richard Brandson did not start charities they made themselves rich. |

And you know we can nominate anyone we like so if you think you know someone who deserves it then why not nominate them rather than call for the whole system to be cancelled because the media concentrate on a few famous people. https://www.gov.uk/honours/overview Oh and they were the New Years honours not Birthday. |

In his defence I would point out that Andy Murray himself said that he thought he was far too young to receive a knighthood.
That's how it always used to be. Take the likes of Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst. They won the World Cup for their county in 1966 - probably the biggest achievement in sport - but didn't get knighted until the 1990's when they were in their 60's. Similarly Paul McCartney was knighted in 1997, not back in the 1960's at the height of the Beatles success. That's how it should be, otherwise it devalues the whole thing IMO. |

On a visit to Tesco's just now I glanced at the papers and the headline in one said the last survivor of the dam busters raid aged I think 85 was nominated for a honour and rightly so I think but what happens he was turned down now if anyone was a hero it was this brave man .How can you compare this gentleman to any of the others I mentioned earlier.Turned down and yet honours were given to Camerons cronies and pop stars and sports stars.Makes you want to weep.

I would rather this than those made Lords because they are friends of a certain Prime Minister or have donated large sums of money to political parties. The first have gained by their hard work and achievements the second are those who have friends in high places and can buy their way. |

You mean like the 95% of people on the list who have done good works but are not sports people, actors etc?
From the Oxford English Dictionary. I think their outstanding achievements does make them heroes in my eyes. Certainly more so than say a paid killer in the armed forces who is labelled a hero just for signing up. |

Fair play to him for saying that and I agree. This idea that sports stars like Murray and Farah should be knighted at a young age when they still haven't finished their career doesn't seem right to me. I think it should be something awarded long after they've finished competing when you can look back at their achievements and also recognize things they've contributed off the court/track as ambassadors for sport etc..
