You mention Jack Charlton and Geoff Hurst so why did Bobby Moore the captain not get given a honour I am not a England supporter but I think he was one of the best players England have ever had.
Bobby Moore sadly died in 1993 so maybe missed out for that reason, as I don't think they get awarded after death. |

If Andy Murray was good enough to get a knighthood why not Booby Moore

Yes I know about your Victoria Crosses and such but I think Knighthood would have been more deserving.
The reasons for the award are very different to Knighthood |

No one deserves an honour just for doing their job however good thy are at it, as they have already been rewarded with pay, medals and trophies or both. Honours should be for people who do something that helps others and for which they get no other reward (financial or otherwise). Theyt should also do away with the Sevices To ... bollocks and actually list what a person did to deserve their honour.

Seeing as you're not dishing out the honours, it's largely irrelevant what your definition of a hero is. Do you propose only heroes (as per your definition) should receive honours?

Why just bravery? A hero could be someone who does a lot for charity for example.

The actors, sports stars and pop stars get the award for what, doing their job?

If they are good enough pop stars have their own industry honours, equally if they are good enough athletes will win titles and gold medals, why do they need OBEs, and so on.

How will Andy Murray now be addressed by umpires and officials at tennis tournaments, particularly at Wimbledon, who being Wimbledon will presumably want to be seen to follow the correct etiquette.
Generally male players are referred to as Mr Surname or just Surname. e.g. "Mr Murray has won the toss and elected to serve", "Mr Murray has 2 challenges remaining" or "Game and first set Murray!". He is no longer "Mister Murray" so will they now have to refer to him as "Sir Andy", as in "Sir Andy has challenged the line call", "Game, set and match Sir Andy!"? ![]() Would be a bit weird wouldn't it?

I expect that the same protocol will apply as with actors who have titles. They are hardly ever credited on screen with their titles. I very much doubt that Sir Andy will want to be referred to as such on court.

I can't think that would ever be an issue for actors, but Wimbledon specifically refer to players as Mr Murray, Mr Djokovic etc so will they continue to do that for Murray and use the 'wrong' former title? |

In the real world, none of this actually matters - therefore, why do people feel so strongly about the validity of these honours?

Look what's the problem?
"Normal people" are given awards but the fact is, like all things in life, not all the best "normal people" get the publicity and award some may deem they deserve. We are not going to fire out knighthoods to 'Derrick from Scunthorpe' and 'Sheila from Bognor Regis' just because they raised some money for the local village raffle. People decry 'sports stars'. Andy Murray was just a normal person at one point, who then dedicated his life to tennis and EARNED his fame and achievements. Why shouldn't he be honoured? He has given entertainment to millions, raised the profile of tennis and done something barely any other Brit has done before. |

I don't agree with any of these awards. It's descended into farce and is just a mickey-take now. Giving out knighthoods to young folk who still have their whole lives ahead of them is ridiculous. If awards must be given, then it should be in a persons later years after a life well lived - more of a 'lifetime achievement' award.
They should not be given a 'title' - it is so old fashioned these days. 'Dame' sounds like the person is about 70 - it's daft for young people like Jessica Ennis-Hill, Kelly Holmes and Ellen McCarthur. Being 'knighted' for playing tennis or running a race or riding a bike is a nonsense. These folk are already well remunerated and decorated in their own fields. Why do they need more? These awards are just meaningless and the more they are handed out willy-nilly the less they are worth. No disrespect to Victoria Beckham - she has made a success of herself and good on her. But who on earth nominated her for an OBE? I am dreading the day her husband is knighted. Also Gary Barlow. |

The person/people who have nominated them will have to fill all that on the nomination form.

To be honest, they won't give a shit what you think.
It just is sickening all these celebrity types getting yet another pat on the back for bugger all apart from doing their well-paid jobs. |
