I think it didn't go down well when he reported back to May that the other EU governments thought negotiations would take 10 years.
A case of shooting the messenger.

With only a couple of months to go before Article 50 is triggered, they'd want to get their skates on with appointing his successor.

No great surprise. I doubt a former private secretary to Ken Clarke, principal private secretary to Tony Blair, Cameron's chief adviser during his infamous re-negotiations and someone who reckons it would take 10 years to complete a deal with the EU is the best person to be involved in Brexit negotiations.

He knows brexit is utterly impossible and has resigned with his dignity in tact.

We can only hope and pray MP's block brexit to prevent the utter destruction of our economy and way of life.

Everything is awesome, the sunny uplands of Brexit await etc.

It brings the car crash that is hard Brexit a few months closer. But Gove, Banks and the Express think his going is great so May will have to toe the line.

BoJo for the job, anyone?

What an utter car crash.

The button will be pressed by the deluded fools who believe all will be fine. Events are going to eat them up, totally.

Those who understand what is around the corner will be running for the hills. I wouldn't be surprised if Hammond doesn't join them when the going starts to get really tough.

Another expert out of the way.
Gove will be delighted. I expect he'll nominate his milkman as replacement.

Anyone called N. Farage need not apply.

As I said in the other thread, it sounds like the government is taking on the stupid Brexiter trait of "ignore the facts and criticise those whose job it is to establish them", so they've fired this guy for not telling May and the three stooges what they want to hear.

Quite. Instead of a civil servant, who spends their whole career intentionally being neutral, and whose job it is to represent the country and negotiate on a professional and level headed basis, we should get Nige to do it. No bias there at all. We can pay him in beer and fags.

While I wouldn't wish it on your country, it would serve Farage right if he was made responsible for the negotiations.

I agree 100%.

This disaster can still be averted but the clock is rapidly ticking down and once the timebomb goes off this country is finished. No ifs, buts or maybes, if the trigger is pushed on article 50 we're done.

He was probably Britain's most knowledgeable and experienced civil servant/representative in EU matters.

Actually, he merely reported back that other EU leaders thought it would take 10 years. That wasn't his personal opinion.

According to the prevailing logic of this government, that's all the more reason for not involving him. The fewer people who actually understand what's involved and know what they're doing, the better for May and the muppet show.

There are suggestions in the article above that his private comments were leaked by hard Brexiteers in an attempt to undermine him publicly.

Theresa May is incompetent, a crisis manager and fearful of her party’s right-wing. Soon she will be entering negotiations with 27 EU member states, determining the UK’s global realignment. It will only take one high profile UK Brexit company decision to end her gravity defying poll ratings. If Vodafone, EasyJet, a motor manufacturer or bank decide to relocate and lay-off thousands of UK workers, then Mrs May’s political career is over. Delivering on the “will of the people” is no substitute for unemployment.

Nigel is thrilled anyway and says a lot more should resign :

Nigel Farage, the former Ukip leader, told the Press Association that “a lot more” British diplomats should follow Sir Ivan Rogers and resign.

I think it would be appropriate if a lot more people in that position, British ambassadors, left. The world has changed. The political establishment in this country and the diplomatic service just doesn’t accept the vote.

He also said Theresa May should replace Rogers with a “firm Brexiteer”.

She should welcome it with open arms and put a firm Brexiteer in the position. Somebody who recognises that the world has changed, somebody tough, so we can get on with Brexit.

According to reports it was, it is also reported he said other EU leaders agreed with him.

We'd be better off appointing a realist. Send someone in with impossible demands (in terms of cake and eating it) who will just antagonise everyone and we'll end up with nothing.
