Happy New Year!

Today at 20:00 I will be having my first swimming lesson and boy am I dreading it! Not because I'm scared of water but because I'm a 29 year old guy who can't swim at all. Has anyone else learned to swim as an adult and was it as humiliating as i think it's going to be?

dont worry. i was 29 when i learned to swim. once i found i could do half a width, there was no stopping me. my husband was 40 when he decided to learn. as he wasnt scared of the water, he did as i instructed and was off like a missile. youre still young. go for it. and have fun

I did it a few years ago. I haven't swam since but at least I know how.

One thing I will say is push yourself. There were people in my class who would be happy standing in the shallow end talking and they came out at the end unable to swim. I think I had about ten lessons. Good luck

I was 24
All I needed was for someone to be with me and give me confidence
I could swim after one lesson, and soon after achieved my mile badge!

Best of luck!

Don't think of it as being humiliating, it's no more humiliating than learning to drive a car at 29, or learning to play a musical instrument or speak a language.

If you're not scared of water, you're already one step ahead.

My son learnt to swim last year at 26 and I was in my forties before I ditched armbands.

Good on you.

It's never too late to try something new - and being able to swim is certainly worthwhile.

You may never break any records but if you can swim a bit it's always likely to be to your advantage.

Slightly different but I was in my 40s before I learned to ski. Learning when you're a bit older can be slow and frustrating but it's still possible and it's good to try to master something new when you're an adult.

Hope it goes well.

A friend of mine learned to swim in his early 30s, and he found it absolutely life changing. The first time he went to a beach and swam in the sea was absolutely liberating, apparently.

Good luck!

Its amazing to see them on holiday with my grandkids and great grand kids really enjoying their time in the pool.

In the Autumn I scared my boss (mid 30s) into learning to swim. He'd just bought a new house near the river, has 2 young children and couldn't swim!
