By how much water's leaving the system or something, without anyone reporting it? There's a fairly big leak near us and don't know whether to report it or not. The end of our road is under about 3 in of water caused by it and I just got splashed by a car. The leak's under the pavement.

Why wouldn't you report it? Don't assume someone else has done it.

I'll look up the number and if it's a freephone number like 0800 I'll report it.

EDIT. Found the Leakline and it's 0800. Was -2 here last night so bet there are lots of burst pipes.

I'm sure if it's a big water main they can tell.

Check out the website of the water company. They may have a page to report leaks, for example

https://www.thameswater.co.uk/help-a...-or-burst-pipe

Mind you don't expect them to be in any hurry to fix it! We had a leak across the road from work on a strip of grass alongside the road. It took weeks for Thames Water to come out and fix it.

And when they did turn out it was about 10 o'clock at night and they managed to take out an electricity main cable running near the water pipes plunging the area into darkness!!

I think I saw something on a technology programme once (may have been Click) about using perturbations in the vibrations of the flowing water through the pipe system to identify where there was a problem just by putting a stethoscope type instrument on the outside of the pipe at a few key accessible locations.

Okay got through and she says they didn't know about it so thanked me for ringing. She says they can tell when it's a major water main as suddenly more water's running though it but not smaller leaks. They rely on people reporting them. Often it's the police she said.
