The slow demise of Ford is not a triumph for US manufacturing.
No.

Ford profits more than double to $2.45bn

but will Mexico put up with it? They could come back with an even sweeter offer
And trump puts the tariff up to 100% on imported ford cars. There is nothing the Mexicans can do

I don't think he actually cares.

not sure he can really dictate that unless he is going to slap massive tariffs on everything the US imports.

his original policy was that should a company relocate manufacturing out of the US to another country he would slap tariffs on those products. from what i can see this is not what Toyota are doing, so it falls outside of his stated policy.

of course given Trump usually just makes things up as he goes along we shouldn't be surprised he doesn't even know what his own policy is ...

Well, he is mucking around quite a lot. If he'd studied at school instead of knowing he'd have success handed to him on a silver plate he'd know that protectionism doesn't work well economically.

And to think many Brexiteers are convinced Trump will give us a generous trade deal!

And the US is supposed to be the country of free enterprise not protectionism. He's going to lose a lot of friends (assuming he has any to start with) in Corporate America if he keeps on with his anti-business nonsense.

That's another American Myth, protectionism has always been high on the list of things American businesses want from DC.

Trump is just going to run his administration the same way he does his businesses.
He demands something then makes threats and bullies to try and make it happen.
It's only a matter of time before he picks on the wrong person.

no american company would risk going against a US president. The mexicans are up against someone who believes moving manufacturing back to the US and making it hard to dump cheap goods in the american market.

It's a policy that makes it hard for non US companies to do business.
lol companies go up against the government all the time. they're Presidents, not Kings.

Trump can't unilaterally declare a 25% tariff on American companies in Mexico selling product back to the states, nor would anyone want him to. Nobody should salivate over a trade war or tit-for-tat tariffs.

Trump's knowledge of international trade would literally get him flunked out of an freshman macro class.

The economists answer to this is that by preventing US companies from using cheaper labour markets and imposing tariffs on imports it will push up the price of cars to Americans. This will leave them with less money to spend on other goods and services in the economy and have a slightly depressing effect on demand. Of course though the increase in money that stays in the US because of the us of US factories should be greater than the overall loss.

The issue is though whether foreign countries start retaliating by imposing tariffs or restrictions on US companies selling goods and services in their countries. If they do then you end up with a classic trade war which ends up making everyone poorer without exception.

I'm sure that will be his intention but he will find out that the Constitution, Congress and Supreme Court wont be so easy to bully.

His problem is not losing friends but growth.
