Seeing as it's open season for recasting established characters shouldn't SOC recast the role of Linda Carter while Kellie Bright is on maternity?

Surely it's better than having her off screen? And when Kellie's maternity is over if she doesn't want to come back full time she could job share. Kellie could play Linda on Mondays and Tuesdays while the other actress could play Linda on Thursdays and Fridays... what's important is that the character is present, not who plays her.

Absolutely not. Neighbours did that with Libby Kennedy and it was savaged by fans from what I remember.

The break will probably refresh Linda's character.

I've often thought a job share would work for Sam Mitchell. Daniella Westbrook could film Mon-Weds, and then Kim Medcalf could film Thurs-Saturday so Westbrook can go out and get coked up at the weekends.

I see no reason the same arrangement couldn't work for Linda. Quality idea.

Thanks.

Why not? People with small children need flexibilty and that's a workable solution.

It doesn't matter who plays the character so long as she's on screen.

This is the problem employing women of child baring age in soaps.

No thank you.

Another perfectly acceptable and workable solution... and viewers are already know both Sams so they would have no difficulty.

My only proviso is that Medcalf has to do any crying scenes. The show is pre watershed after all.

Why, the BBC is supposed to be a progressive employer after all? Flexibility is important for young parents.

I don't think that was a job share... they just changed their minds.

Surely this is a much better solution than having the Queen Vic landlady off screen for months at a time

no it wasn't to do with changing their minds Babara bel gaddis had to undergo life saving operation in which they decided to recast the character to donna reed but later on they fired donna because Barbara bel gaddis wanted to return as Mrs Ellie

Does anyone know anyone who just disappears from their family's life to look after someone for 6 months or longer. Many actresses taking leave, but it would be more sensible to just refer to them as having gone to the shop or they were upstairs.

I have always wondered if Part time temporary recasting works in soaps

Well after what they did in Neighbours with Libby Kennedy and Cheryl Stark

And in Home and Away with Ailsa

The answer is

No

Recasting to cover maternity - or other short-term leave - wouldn't be an option for me, but I don't see why they couldn't employ a "double" to be seen vaguely in the background or from behind, and then character in question just doesn't have a major storyline for the duration of their break.

It would also have been a way of having characters like Michelle present at funerals, weddings etc. Don't know why they don't do it, quite straightforward I would have thought.

Tempany Deckert / Louise Crawford as Selina in 'Home and Away'. Tempany was ill, so Louise took over for a while.

I actually remember when they did that

You know what i actually prefered the Louise Crawford Selina to the original as she was annoying

I agree and I also feel they should bring back characters as ghosts... it would be such a treat for viewers... say bring back Bill Treacher for Michelle, or Peggy for Ronnie and Roxy's death... I'd love a scene with Kathy and Pat, Den and Angie and Sharon... there are so many options.

Many people see people who have passed so it wouldn't necessarily be unrealistic or contrived.
