Meg in Sunset Beach.

Hayley in Home & Away. This could be construed as a standard recast, but the replacement actress was only contracted for a couple of months to finish off Hayley's storyline when Bec Cartwright left earlier than anticipated.

I suppose Miss Ellie in Dallas could be considered a temporary recast, although this was news to Donna Reed as it turned out.

The Ailsa recast in Home and Away is the one I always remember too ... really appalling especially as it came when Ailsa was right in the middle of a major storyline

She was so ugly as well. Complete insult to the real actress who played Ailsa.

Rebecca Fisher in H&A was also recast temporarily. H&A did this a lot in the 90s, thankfully they stopped doing it!

I remember that. The actress had cancer so they recast for a while but she resumed the role when she recovered. Sadly, the cancer came back and she died about 10 years ago.

She clearly infected Scott Hunter with her polar opposite recastitis and that how he came to be Brad Willis.

Libby in Neighbours. I'll always remember her walking into the coffee shop on her phone saying 'Hello, Libby Kennedy speaking'. Who does that?!

Yes I remember that well! The original actress had glandular fever and was out for several months!

Yeah, I really wish they'd delayed the story until the original actress could return, it was one of Ailsa's biggest ever story lines and probably would be a lot more memorable today if the original actress had been there.

Having said that, the temp actress didn't do a bad job, if you look at it objectively.

Pam Ewing was played by Maragaret Michaels post plastic surgery, and came in to end her storyline off -- and was the best recast Ive ever seen - they looked and sounded absolutely identical -- look

The actress got Ailsa's voice and mannerisms quite well but looked nothing like the original actress (Judy Nunn).

Also in H&A: Selina and Mitch McColl.

In Neighbours: Cheryl played by Colette Mann (Sheila) while Caroline Gillmer was away.

Does Kim Medcalf as Sam Mitchell count as a temporary recast ?

Ordinarily if someone is ill, they do try to give their storylines to someone else if possible. However, in this case, it was such a major storyline for Ailsa that they couldn't give it to someone else or delay it.

I remember that too. In typical Sunset Beach style they referenced it in the script with other characters mentioning that she looked different.

Well actually they could delay it because Ailsa (original actress) went out of town to "think things over" for a few weeks, then came back (temp actress) to resume the storyline. They could have just kept her away until the original actress was well enough.

It was a very insular storyline, affecting only Ailsa and Shauna (and peripherally Alf and Duncan) with no ties to other characters or storylines, so could have easily been put off and replaced with something else.
