Terrible choice in the first place.

They caved into the pundit demands in the first place as usual clamouring for their mate to get the job "because why wouldn't you just give it to him permanently???". Well, err because he is shite.

That said no one could have done any better really. They were doomed from day 1.

That's the man who masterminded Manchester United's success that you're talking about.

There are lots of 'behind the scenes heads' that do 'such and such' at clubs and everyone raves about them. They may be successful in their roles as coach, but coach is not manager. Phelan might have been effectively leading training for fergie near the end, but he wasn't the manager.

Along with Kidd, McLaren, Walter Smith and Queiroz... all went on to show their leadership skills.

Didn't Hull offer him a new contract after about three games of the season?

He was caretaker and they offered him the job permanently.

Not sure what the point of this is. Hull were a mess in the summer so it's hard to imagine any manager having them in a much stronger position than this. They're just not a good team.

Pardew now? I'm struggling to think of who else there is.

It is strange that it took them until January to sack Phelan when in that same period Swansea have already sacked two managers and they have just appointed their third manager of this season

The owners have obviously lost interest.

They should sell up if they are not interested.

Ridiculous decision. Timing is awful too. We played really well against Everton and looked very good in parts against Man City and West Brom. A new man coming in will still have the same owners to deal with, the same squad and the same pissed off fans who have had to go through so much, would he really do any better ?

I liked Mick Phelan and wanted him to be given a proper go. Sorry to see him leave

Giggs perhaps?

Be interesting to see who they appoint, as they look doomed more matter who they get.

Did they offer him the job after they beat the reigning champions at the start of the season

Gary Rowlett.

Building for the CHampionship.

Or maybe they will give it to Giggs for one last doomed experiment.

He was on a hiding to nothing from the outset.

Hopefully he got a decent severance pay off.

Bruce quit as he knew the owners weren't going to assist him in keeping the team in the top flight, after all the crap about changing the name etc, this owner is doing sweet FA for the club. With no investment in the summer it makes Swansea look like a well run club. At least at the start of the season Swansea had a chance of staying up, Hull were always expected to drop, and with many points between them.

Phelan took the caretaker role on, and did enough for the club to appoint him. The way some are talking in here, they were expecting him to make diamonds out of turds. The fact that the one Hull fan on here is praising him, suggests something. This trumps Birmingham sacking Rowett for me, it's that stupid.

It's one of those ones where I'm left wondering what the board were actually expecting.

Finish 4th in the Championship and come up via playoffs. As soon as the final whistle goes at Wembley they have to be favourites for the drop. If they invest wisely at that point they can maybe improve their chances of staying up. Instead they make little money available which strengthens their chances of going down further and it's so little money that the man who took them up quits as a result of it.

I mean ffs, they had 14 senior pros in late August and the task of keeping them up was rightly being called a miracle! - https://www.theguardian.com/football...league-miracle

I'm not really sure that Swansea is a good example to be following...

Be a surprise if they appoint someone with no managerial experience.

Ryan Giggs was manager of Man United for about ten games after they sacked David Moyes

Presumably they're already planning for being back in the Championship, and feel that Rowett / Pardew or whoever they appoint would be a better choice than Phelan to lead them to promotion again. They could've waited around longer to see if results pick up under Phelan, but would then risk missing out on the manager they'd want to bring in if the unlikely survival doesn't happen. I don't think the new manager is being brought in with realistic expectations of saving them, if he somehow does then that's a massive bonus for them. It'll be an appointment with an eye on next season.
