It was the same in the UK before Coco Chanel popularised the suntan. If someone had slightly suntanned skin, they must work outdoors. Pale, never-worked-a-day-in-my-life skin was the done thing among non-working class people.
Your post reminded me of Nicola Roberts from Girls Aloud. I never realised until watching a documentary she made about her skin which is very white. I saw her in 'normal' life shopping in Wilmslow and she is extremely white! Very pretty girl though. She made a range of makeup to suit whiter than normal skin. I could understand that and it made sense, bleaching black skin to become white doesn't.

Its incredibly popular in Asian countries as its to with the "class" system over there.

Traditionally dark skin was attributed to field labourers who toiled in the outdoors everyday, thus making them darker, and whiter paler skin associated to those of a higher class and white collar workers.
Hence why its popular to lighten the skin to appear less working class.
I think its very sad as its something that's deep rooted in culture/society.

This should be rooted out, as its far more than just a new fashion that people follow.
