Traditionally dark skin was attributed to field labourers who toiled in the outdoors everyday, thus making them darker, and whiter paler skin associated to those of a higher class and white collar workers. Hence why its popular to lighten the skin to appear less working class. This should be rooted out, as its far more than just a new fashion that people follow.
