L Ron Hubbard was nothing but a quack from start to finish, what does it matter whether he invented a religion or a cult ?

I've never heard of a family bankrupted by the Catholic Church. Have you? I've heard of many bankrupted by Scientology.
I've never heard of either. Giving away all of your possessions though, leaving yourself destitute, sounds a bit unrealistic.

Typical DS! Would you prefer it if we stopped this discussion and talked about something that you'd prefer to talk about instead?

In answer to your question, it doesn't matter one jot.

That the Vatican hoards more. They may have more but as Patsy pointed out they've been around for well over 1000 years.

The economist estimated that Catholic Charities spent 170 billion on charity in 2010.

They support loads of hospitals around the world.

They also rate highly by those that do such things such as charitynavigator.org which rates them at 93.52 currently.

They're not on my list but it can not be denied that they do actually spend some of their vast fortune on those who need help.

I never claimed that they weren't charitable. I said the the Vatican hoards far more than the Scientologists do (ie, more than $1.5billion). That is a fact. Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word 'hoards'? Though I can't think of a better term for billions of dollars worth of gold, jewels, works of art and other assets. It is quite a hoard, all told.

I don't know about Jesus, Paul and the rest but Hubbard just stumbled upon a way of making a quick buck from his mad occultist musings and decided to go to town with it.

Yes it is a lot but it did take them centuries to accumulate that.
In 2011 Radaronline got a hold of the 990 T Tax form of Scientology and it showed 1.2 billion in total assets.

I'm not sure if this is correct but I heard that Stacy joined the Scientologists in part for business connections (for her career) and sang on the cruise ship owned by some higher up in the organization. I wouldn't be surprised if she joined for career reasons and then got "brainwashed".

Now I am curious about the story behind Tom Cruise's divorce and his not talking to Suri (sp?)

I'm not sure what the significance of them accumulating it over centuries is. Hundreds of years from now, assuming that they're still going, the Scientologists will be able to make the same claim. Using the fact that Scientology is relatively new is an example of the kind of cherry picking that one has to do to draw some sort of distinction between "good churches" and "bad churches".

As for the total assets, $1.2bn (or $1.5bn) doesn't seem unreasonable to me. If we had something to compare that with it may be useful.

Here is a link to a good documentary on Scientology called Going Clear.
https://documentaryaddict.com/films/...ison-of-belief

I learn something interesting every series. I learned about Travelers from the season Hughie was on and now about Scientology this series. There is no comparison between the two but they were both fairly new topics for me to learn more about.
