Cant remember what the BBC did when they came back on air but I'm sure BBC1 had an extended news programme that evening.
If I remember local radio went back to near normal programmes in the evening. Darren http://www.meldrum.co.uk/mhp/continuity/diana.html Quote:
Channel 4 and 5 resumed normal programmes at around 11am, whilst the BBC and ITV continued their blanket coverage for the rest of the day.

TV will go into overdrive and the internet might crash. I have the internet, games and loads of DVDs to keep me occupied. Here in Ireland it might not have a massive impact on TV and I guess business and education will go on as normal (it did for the Royal Wedding - I had an exam the morning the wedding was on and my university's SU bar showed it for people who didn't have an exam on that morning), but it will be a big news story and people will talk about it and some might watch the funeral. It'll be in our newspapers too. People will be shocked and I guess sad that it's the end of an era as the Queen has been a constant in most of our lives, but at the end of the day life has to go on.

No one has asked the BIG question yet - will DS go offline out of respect?

What if the news broke during a penalty shootout and especially if it was the FA or League Cup final?

Funnily enough it could change TV here forever, because I'd guess the terrestrials may not get the people they lose to streaming back during that period. |

It wouldn't break then, because I'm sure Buck House would delay the announcement.

That would be fantastic for any sporting fan and prevent complaints about unbalanced coverage as could always start the breaking news on BBC2 and switch once winning penalty goes in and quickly get the pundits to sum match up in one word before rushing off.

It's irrelevant, BBC is legally obligated to pull everything for 12 days after.

With her present illness, I have read many times that the programmes on all channels especially the BBC would be suspended when the Queen dies. I've also heard that the BBC now have has black ties on standby after the time when Peter Sissons wore a pruple one when the Queen Mother died but I don't hear is that are particluar newsreaders on any of the networks on call for the annoucement of her passing if outside peak slots or would whoever is doing the shift at the time have the honour of breaking the news?
The BBC completely messed up the QM's death coverage from start to finish (despite having more notice than ever expected) and Prince Charles wouldn't speak to them for ages. |

Mind you despite all these predictions of her dying this year I'm certain she's got another 15 years in the bag, she'll definitely outlive her mother imo. Phillip's probably got another 2 years left in him. |

She's not dying until after Prince Charles does - she's already told him that.

Imagine it, "now from one sudden death situation to another". |

I think it may be like when Dianna died.
I woke up that morning to the radio playing sad music. I had at first though the radio station had been changed but then every few mins the radio would say about the death. BBC1 and ITV went off air for an hour or two that morning and put up a notice about the death. ITV went to a news programme when it came back on air. Cant remember what the BBC did when they came back on air but I'm sure BBC1 had an extended news programme that evening. If I remember local radio went back to near normal programmes in the evening. Anyway the queen may live for another 5 to 10 years yet. Darren |

It'll be just another day for me, maybe a few days off work (I'll celebrate that for myself). Whilst I don't dislike the royal family, I don't exactly like them either; their lives, deaths etc mean little to me. Just another celebrity who's time is up, and life goes on.

Wasn't some King's imminent death, 'speeded up' so that the announcement coincided with inclusion in the 'quality' newspapers?

Thankfully we now have Netflix.
I also have Netflix I can use as well as a few extra channels via BT TV. Not many people had the internet back then when Dianna died and there was not really any on demand services for us to watch as an alternative. Just shows you how times have changed. Darren |

The TV ratings for the Royal Wedding in 2011 on RTE were very high, showing that interest in the royals is keen, even though we are a Republic. |

The sport will be cancelled. When King George died the cinemas all closed. I never did see the film I was going to on that day!
