I agree we don't have to watch news coverage of it all day anymore.
I also have Netflix I can use as well as a few extra channels via BT TV.
Not many people had the internet back then when Dianna died and there was not really any on demand services for us to watch as an alternative.
Just shows you how times have changed.

Darren
The only alternatives back in 1997 were videotapes and maybe there were still normal shows on some of the cable/satellite channels at the time. I don't know what existed then. We only had channels 1-5. I don't remember if my parents watched all the news about Diana or if they made me watch it or if they let me watch children's programmes or videos instead. I sort of remember having to watch the funeral instead of kids TV and mum taping it. I might have to ask them how much they remember.

I think it would be a huge news story in Ireland and they would extend all their news bulletins for days afterwards and have special editions of Prime Time etc.

The TV ratings for the Royal Wedding in 2011 on RTE were very high, showing that interest in the royals is keen, even though we are a Republic.
I imagine it will be and of course it'll be a talking point on the internet, in our newspapers and on our TV and radio stations. It'll be a big story, but I don't think business and education will come to a close. Shops will probably still be open and life will go on in that sense. A lot of people follow the Royals. I remember some of my friends at university talking about the Queen's visit in 2011 and we were celebrating finishing exams in the SU bar and some people were watching the Queen's visit on Sky News. My neighbour's kids (both girls) are also fascinated by Kate Middleton and admire her dresses.

Think channels like Sky Sports F1 don't have to show the death, Through they could flash up breaking news on Sky News now.
They'll probably stick up a banner advising viewers to change to Sky News or maybe a news ticker.

If Sports channels to pull the football or motor racing when she has passed, then I will just watch the football or F1 on various sources as I cannot see the international stations being affected. But then I very much doubt that the likes of the FA or FIA will interrupt schedules with all the money they are getting.

None of the UK sports leagues will be in action during the 12 day period - so there will be nothing to broadcast. I'm pretty sure that Sky Sports will continue to air the foreign sports coverage they have but maybe without any corresponding UK production/commentary.

Then all football teams would do the minutes silence in the new season
It'd be pointless doing it 2 months after the event if she died in June.......I'd still just browse the internet during it anyway.

No reason for all UK sport to stop for 12 days. None at all. Not even the Queen dying.

Source?

It didn't happen when King George VI died on 6th February 1952. The funeral was held on 15th Feb and Football League games were played on the 9th and 16th Feb as scheduled.

I don't think I can find an article to link to, but I know the ECB has put by funds for the possibility of a cancelled test match. This is because if the England team were abroad the ECB would have to meet the host teams expenses (lost revenue) just as much as if it happened in the english summer.

This was mentioned in a couple of online articles a couple of years ago, but the problem is they were reporting on a wide ranging statement from ECB covering about half a dozen issues, of which a royal death was just one issue (so that wasn't the headline, as other matters were also covered) Therefore (although I've tried) I haven't been able to find said articles (because headline was probably about something else)

I agree it's possible that International games might be postponed, because the team is representing the whole country, but there's nothing to indicate that all domestic sport would be cancelled, which is what I was responding to.

Do they legally have to do this? It seems absolutely daft in this modern day and age. Most people it'll be less of a big deal than David Bowie or their fave pop star dying to their lives.

To quote the west wing- The London Daily Mirror
And yet I cannot see any mention of the BBC being "legally obligated" to do anything.

What is the Protcool for Radio Station..
Non-BBC stations (commercial, community, hospital, university) will probably also have their own "obit procedures"; such as switching to middle-of-the-road or light-classical music, etc.

An emergency tone alerts presenters. BBC has a Radio Alert Transmission System and the entire network will switch to Radio 4 coverage. Commercial radio has an alarm that come on the IRN feed and switch to that.

The trouble with commercial radio is so many stations leave/join or jocks come and go as freelancers that it'd be a miracle if that goes off without a hitch.
Indeed - most of us on here will recall the slip-up made by IRN when the Queen Mother died, due to someone only pressing one of the two buttons needed to activate the Obit Alarm and meaning that a large number of stations weren't notified. I forget who, but one poster on here remarked at the time that the person who made the error couldn't tell the difference between buttons marked "hot soup" and "dead royal". Didn't IRN review their obit procedure in light of that blunder?
