I have an old Buffalo NAS drive, got to be at least 6 years old and have been used a lot and left on for most of those six years, but it is now dying, it seems to just turn off and bleep for no reason at all. Everything is backed up from it, almost,. but what is on there is not important.

So looking for a new NAS, around the £100 mark, should I go for another buffalo, since this one have been so reliable, the only problem I have with it is the UI is so slow or should I opt for a WD as they seem pretty good?

I got myself one of these

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computi...36641-pdt.html

last summer. Been totally reliable. It does come with various bits of software to do background back-ups from your computer(s) but I also use Macrium Reflect (the paid for version) to do scheduled daily back-ups of my data files.

Don't be fooled by the blurb on the Currys website, it is a NAS device despite Currys only mentioning USB.

That was one of the ones i was looking at, Argos have the 3TB version, but out of stock, I would have got a discount on that as well.

My NAS have now come up with emergency mode, so I think it have had it's day, annoying really as i did not really want to spend at the moment.

Thanks for the reply, I will have a think,

From advice on here last year I went down the Synology route after my 6 year old WD MyWorld started to fritz last year. Haven't looked back, brilliant piece of kit. Fine, bigger initial outlay but it's head and shoulders above the WD (though I shoved a WD drive in it).

I went for the DS216j.

Go for a Synology or Qnap, higher initial outlay but far better than WD.

I had a look at them and they are really more than I want to pay, by the time you pay for the enclosure and the drive/s. they look good, but over my price limit.

thanks anyway

I did pop into PC world yesterday, had a look at the WD one, it looks good, but have not got it yet, having second thoughts now on should I buy one or not, will I make full use of it.

When i first had my old NAS, I had a couple of computers, ps3 and the laptop. I used to be able to access music and films of the Nas for the Ps3, but now the Ps3 have died I have no need for that and I do not really use my laptop that often and I only have one desktop working now.

I will have a think about it,.

The Synology units are worth the money. There is more functionality than you can shake a stick at.

I love my DS214SE. I have 2x4TB drives in it.

The DS216SE is only £119 from Amazon with free delivery. Not really much outside your budget, and is a two-bay device.

That's just the enclosure though, no drives

By the time you've added the recommended drives to the enclosure you have pretty much doubled the price for the lowest capacity option.

I've had Synology devices for a few years now - started off with a MyCloud then moved to a Zyxel and then on to a Synology DS113 which i've upgraded to a DS116 with a 3TB drive so they'd always get my vote as well.

As has been said, more functionality than you can shake a stick at and a fairly decent developer community as well for custom addons.

Sickrage being my favourite .. *ahem*

This is the problem, i know people say about features, what features do i need other than to save and retrieve files from the drive.

iTunes server - store your music centrally and access it from any device.
video station - same with video content and have a netflix-style app to access it
photo station - same again with photo storage
sickrage/sonarr - fully functional pvr's to automatically search for and download tv shows
plex - full media client

you can also enable the drives for web access to access and download files remotely and also create and maintain websites and blogs as well.

if you use it just to save and retrieve files then you're really only using a small percentage of what it can actually do.

but obviously i get it's personal choice
