In a way that's my story - I had northern parents but a lot of my formative years were spent abroad being taught English by non-English people with no English accent, so it's an accent-free voice (although I do have a bit of American twang in there). Even 25 years in Woking didn't lead to me changing (even though half of Woking seem to be auditioning to be in Eastenders
).My Mum used to call me her posh child ![]() I'm back to saying bath and garrige now

No, i'm 32 and sound about 6!
I've had to ring a pharmacy before and book an appointment, I spoke to a lady who then took the phone away from her mouth and said to her colleague "You talk to them, it's just some kid messing about". I hate speaking to anyone on the phone now.

How accents change over the decades. I remember Willie Rushton on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue defining a crèche as 'a car accident in Woking'.
![]() It's the only place I know of that built the train station the wrong way round (main entrance not on the town side).

Best remark I ever heard about Woking is that it should be flattened and made into a car park for Guildford

I live in Haslemere, south of Guildford, and I know Woking. Not as posh as Willie thought it was is it?!

Woking would have looked very different back in 1838 when the railway station opened, so I expect that's the reason why.
![]() ETA: I know they did it because it was a commuter town and it was all residential on the other side where all the commuters lived and it had space for parking, it's always been a bit of a joke for many who live there though. |
