so what did he play then mr pedant ?
![]() how many people did Turnmills hold, and then make the comparison to the whole of the British population to see his level of fame ? ![]() blimey, I quite liked Brandon at that time, even he would admit he was not famous, he even made a quip about household name in his VT ![]() There was a huge movement of house music in the 80's and 90's and you may well snort (pardon the pun) at it but believe me it was a game-changer and set the scene for years to come? Wanky? No - not at all - just someone that enjoyed and still enjoys that scene albeit we have moved on slightly but still a good few clubs around which caters! I am just sick and tired of the eejits on here who have the audacity to make assumptions just because they do not know who someone is to assume they are nobody! Brandon Block and Alex P where indeed a big deal..................Charlie Chester who was a huge promoter and responsible for (still) one of (if not) the biggest house music clubs in Ibiza) was Brandon Block era and big pals / events in Ibiza. Brandon Block may be nothing to you .................... but he was heavily involved in shaping the UK scene ............................. And please do not take his 'quip' literally - he is a humble man! Any BIG DJ will tell you there are nobody - just enjoy the music and get paid for something they enjoy! They will say they will get found out soon because getting so much cash for doing something they love!! Do not take it so literally He did indeed impact back in the day whether yuo say so or not..........and who are you to speak on behalf of the 2% in UK ............... I mean you thought he was a 'hard house' DJ.........![]() Sorry your last comment really annoyed me and small mindedness annoys me when someone thinks they know it all |

He was massive...one of the early 'superstar' DJs all around the country and beyond - he helped make Ibiza what it became.

the 'superstar' djs made the entry prices extortionate, Ibiza was in rude health before them
![]() The one and only time I saw Brandon (out there actually) he got more action in one night in the DJ booth than I did that decade No wonder his mixing was a bit patchy!

I've been a house girl since the late 80's - never hard house- and still listen to nothing else even now. I've been to several events over the last few years where Brandon, Nicky Holloway, Trevor Fung are the headliners and the tickets sell out every time. Going again next month 🙂 |

Going again next month 🙂 I'm very jealous you still get out and about to dos! Trevor Fung, forgot him until your post! My last clubbing was at Turnmills, Roger Sanchez, over ten years ago now Alas by then digital tools were such that rather than brilliantly drop snippets/tasters and mix stuff up (he spent about four hours at the Ministry teasing Plastic Dreams and Finally before dropping them both at the same time around five years earlier) he was on his 'I'll just make new tracks on the fly using this beat from there, that vocal sample from here' etc.Dammit if I hear Ajare or Yeke Yeke (not that Sanchez would play either) by all means tease them out and play some funky tricks with them, but you better play most of the damn track!!! ![]() I did hear good things about Carl Cox recently and after about twenty years (he put me off when he went trance) searched out some mixes. Great stuff! Dropping stuff like Waterfall and Renegade Master alongside new tracks I don't know but fit seamlessly - across four decks as always. Loved his 11 hour Space closing set from 2015 (?) and he closed with that Sweet Harmony remix - that must have been emotional to say the least

Anyway not that I'm watching but I'm sure he'll be out soon, and quite happy about it. He must have found some real peace and balance in his life to be clean now. My best male friend spent a weekend with him and the boss of Tag Records (Gat Decor anagram, hence the name of that classic) and almost didn't live to tell the tale, and that was at Brandon's peak, I doubt he stopped for weeks at that point, if at all!
Returning to the above, I'm looking at some DJ equipment but am so disappointed to see folk using it and not even touching the pitch slider during a set. I'm sure it's tempting to set up the BPMs, key and pitch on PC beforehand and spend most of your time dancing around behind the decks...but when you think of the creativity and genius of Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles and the other pioneers (no pun intended) I think it's sacrilege ![]() Carl Cox still DJs 'honestly' (and effortlessly) from what I can see. And that's why Sven Vath is more than just a techno legend imo...two decks, vinyl and a mixer almost 25 years since I first saw him. |

Brandon would be my last choice to be edited out. I imagine he has some interesting tales to tell that don't involve fake tan & hair extensions.

I hear you with the talent though..........I am a fan of detroit and a bit daft on UR stuff as well as Octave One, Kevin Saunderson, etc |

Going again next month 🙂 I just recall back in 90's seeing him all the time in Ibiza. Heading to London he headlined a few times but yes now, he would just do the whole 808 State thing / Altern8 revival - lets go way back etc. All I was saying was he was quoted back in the day - aye he is no Jeff Mills but you know what I mean. My point was in annoyance as to how some people write people off because they are unheard of but would put someone like Bianca Gascoigne as achieving more in fame just because if her dad! Thankfully my bog brothers were pretty cool and into the Hacienda and I was drowned in music and we still head out sometimes. Bit older now however and our tastes have moved on but all in all old acid house / deep from back in the day still gets us moving. |

I hear you with the talent though..........I am a fan of detroit and a bit daft on UR stuff as well as Octave One, Kevin Saunderson, etc Next someone will probably post that the Paradise Garage retrospectively named itself after the Brit scene of the 90s ![]() My only regrets clubbing-wise were missing Frankie at Back 2 Basics in Leeds in 94 or 95 (the northern scene was kicking it, and especially there, then with the likes of Morales, Vasquez, DJ Disciple, Sasha (not my cup of tea by then), Andy Weatherall (one of the best set builders ever imo), Saunderson, Hawtin etc etc etc on weekly (the techno guys in the basement just playing to a few of us!) - just wish I'd been there more often when I had the chance ). Manchester was doing its own thing back then with more local DJs (Park etc) who knew the crowd personally. Cream was monstrous. Hard Times was doing its purest thing and kicking serious arse too. My other regret is not being asked over to NY for Tenaglia's closing night at Be Yourself...went on for at least two days iirc. My friends forgot to tell me they were going :facepalm:Kevin Saunderson my goodness...Pennies From Heaven, Hallaleujah...need I go on?!! The sounds that dreams are made of Derrick May - legend.I was lucky enough to live in Japan when one of the best clubs I've been to worldwide was going - Yellow in Tokyo. Absolutely pure dance music, be it house and/or garage or techno. Every week were the likes of Frankie, May, Barbara Tucker on PA, etc. Sublime, legendary, and probably known mainly only to the locals and the DJs who travelled across the world for the experience. It was a mecca for serious dancers that only stories of the Garage (too young, wrong country) evoke. |
