Why do so many smokers smoke in areas that are very clearly marked as no smoking?

Like bus shelters, outside stations and airports there are usually loads of very clear signs. But smokers just flounce these and light up where they like.

It's horrible for us non smokers that have to wait for a late bus for over an hour and constantly breath in smoke. Couldn't move far away else the bus might quickly come and I could miss it

Oh and it's flaunt -not flounce. I am amused by the idea of smokers flouncing about the place though.

Talk about over reaction...hate to think what your breathing in while waiting for your bus...and that's just what is coming from the road, not someone puffing on a cigarette.

Being addicted doesn't mean you have to ignore the rules and be inconsiderate of other people.

No, I meant flaunt. As in ostentatiously ignoring the signs.

To me flaunt is when you openly display something in the hope of showing people that you have something that you hope that they'll see is better than they have.
e.g. turning up at a family reunion in a Rolls Royce, or going to an exes wedding where lots of guests know you, and having a 20 y.o. real looker on your arm.
Flout is when you deliberately ignore or disobey a rule.
Personally I think smokers light up while standing under a No Smoking sign because a) they want to smoke, so screw you, and the signs, and b) they know full well that the worse case scenario would be a copper wagging his finger at them and telling them that they're naughty.

Some places the law makes it illegal.
Others on private property it is not illegal.
Smoke away there.

Once you're outside you're outside. Those signs trying to stop people smoking are frankly ridiculous

There's already a ban on smoking indoors and now they're trying to police the outdoors.

OP you sound like a sanctimonious pain in the arse tbh.

They're flaunting their contempt by flouting the rules. They may flounce with a fluorish while doing so but that would just make them look more foppish.
Flouting is the basic activity that's going on, flaunting is optional in this case.

The only way a sign will stop smokers is if you hit them with it

Gave up in 2003, hate smelling the stuff but as I was an arse for so many years doing the same I will never moan about it.

Yeah. The first sentence summarises what I meant, in keeping with the hyperbole of the OP. Apologies for lack of clarity. Nice use of f words.

Actually if the bus shelter is 3/4 covered a roof and 2 sides it is covered by anti smoking regulations, I smoke but don't smoke in those type of shelters, however another bus stop only has a roof and still has a no smoking sign, that one I will ignore because its not illegal for me to smoke there - TBH I only smoke there when no-one else is waiting for the bus.

But it does remind me of a story, when the smoking ban came out I was working for a large advertising agency, there was one pub we all used to go to there would be about 10 of us every lunch time, some would pop in on their way home and on Friday nights there would be about 40 of us the smokers among us would go into the pub gardens to light up.

However during the weekend most customers were families who complained about smokers in the gardens on hot days when they wanted to be outside with their kids which is fair enough, however the landlord decided to put a ban on smoking in the garden at any time the consequence for him was that we all just went to another pub., By the time he realised his mistake and lifted the ban during the week it was too late we didn't go back.

it really didn't surprise me to see a couple of the bar staff from the old pub working in the new one having been laid off because trade had gone down so badly a few families on weekends didn't compensate for a lot of hard drinking ad people with money to spend.

I am still in contact with people from my old work and they are still not drinking in the original pub 9/10 years afterwards
