Depending on how much I get paid this month I might be buying a ps4. The question is which one?

I know the Pro has faster ram and download speed and better graphics and is overall a more powerful machine but how significance a difference would it make in game play?

I ask because I want the Pro but my budget is probably going to say no. So I will need to decide PS4 Slim now or save a couple months longer and wait for the pro?

Also I have a standard HD tv

From what I've read if you have a standard HD TV the pro will still only display in HD. Sony themselves say it will have a slightly better frame rate but for the full Pro experience you need a HDR TV. Whichever you go for, Sony say that all future PS4 games will work on either version.

I cant say my PS4 now looks terrible because a pro version is out, Driveclub and Star Wars Battlefront still look amazing. My mate has a pro and yes there a differences but its not stand up and smack you in the face better, it is more subtle than that.

If you are getting a 4k telly soon then a pro is a no brainer i guess, if you aren't then I'd get a slim and enjoy the silence and lower running costs.

As well as frame rate improvements there are graphical improvements to be had on some patched games. For example a game that is shown in 900p on a HD screen may be at 1080p on the pro on a HD display.

HDR is not restricted to the PRO

If you are hung up on getting the finest / best possible image then go PRO to future proof yourself. Personally I don't appreciate the higher reolution of a PRO but am glad it has a bit more grunt for a more stable framerate. I use the PRO on a 4K TV and a HD monitor. I'm just as happy on the HD display.

Another consideration is that there is a massive back catalogue of games that will probably never get patched for the PRO, unlike game releases going forward.

This isn't quite accurate as the pro will still render at a higher resolution on supported games before it gets scaled down for the HD TV. What that means is that you get a much cleaner, crisper image on supported games even though it's ultimately still only displaying at 1080p.

In practical terms that means next to no aliasing (i.e. jagged edges or pixel crawl/shimmer) and more detail being resolved within textures etc.

If I've not explained that very well, google 'super-sampling' for better explanations!

Mileage will vary on how much that matters from person to person but having upgraded to a pro I'm personally very happy with the benefits I've seen so far. Uncharted 4 , Rise Of The Tomb Raider, Battlefield 1 and Watchdogs 2 all look incredible on a pro, for instance. They all look pretty great on a standard PS4 of course but the difference is definitely noticeable even on a standard HD TV.

My advice to the OP would be get a pro if you can afford it. The benefits are already there and in terms of value an extra £100 for twice the grunt is pretty good, and the benefits going forward are only likely to increase so it's future-proofing to an extent. However, if it's really going to be a stretch financially, a standard PS4 model will still play all the same games. Some of them just won't be quite as pretty, that's all.

If you're not sure how much you care about the benefits of improved image quality the Digital Foundry videos comparing Pro-patched games to their standard counterparts are probably the next best thing to comparing them in person.

Hope that helps.

Thanks all.
I definitely can't afford one of those 4k tv's. At least not for at least a year and even though I would love improved graphics and ability I think in the case of my budget restrictions and the fact I won't be able to get a new tv as well that I will go for the slim for now.

All your help was invaluable and makes me excited to get a pro in the future.
